Frequently asked questions

Worcester's nonprofit and educational sectors are growing, increasing demand for program coordinators skilled in youth mentoring and academic support. However, competition remains moderate due to a steady influx of local graduates and professionals aiming to impact community programs like the Bruce Wells Scholars Program.

Balancing varied counseling needs, coordinating internships, and supervising staff can create complex scheduling and communication challenges. Prioritizing individual student goals while maintaining program-wide objectives requires strong organizational skills and flexibility, especially when coordinating evening or weekend events.

Seven Hills Foundation emphasizes hands-on leadership with a focus on first-generation, low-income students. Their coordinators lead both advising and community engagement efforts, combining program supervision with direct student interaction and frequent collaboration with college access directors, a blend less common in standard academic roles.

While 0-3 years of related experience is preferred, candidates demonstrating strong leadership, communication, and organizational abilities with a passion for student success can be competitive. The role offers growth opportunities for emerging professionals committed to educational equity.

Local program coordinator salaries typically range from $40,000 to $50,000 depending on experience and responsibilities. The offered range aligns well with regional standards, reflecting the role's combination of program management and direct student engagement in nonprofit education sectors.

Effective communication, team supervision, and adaptability are critical. The coordinator must inspire staff, manage diverse student needs, and orchestrate community partnerships while maintaining program goals, highlighting the importance of collaborative and strategic leadership within a mission-driven environment.

This role provides a rare chance to impact first-generation students' academic journeys directly, blending counseling, internship coordination, and leadership trip facilitation. It's ideal for candidates seeking meaningful work within a supportive nonprofit focused on community upliftment in Worcester.

Though not always mandatory, a valid driver’s license (Class C or D) is often required due to off-site student activities. Certifications in youth mentoring or program management can enhance candidacy, especially in Worcester's competitive job market for educational coordinators.

The coordinator works closely with the college access director to align the Bruce Wells Scholars Program with other efforts like Upward Bound. This collaboration ensures cohesive support services, shared resources, and unified goals for student academic and career success.

This role uniquely combines staff supervision, direct student advising, and event planning with a focus on first-generation, low-income students. Managing leadership trips and overseeing community service opportunities adds layers of complexity beyond typical administrative tasks.
