Frequently asked questions

Medical Extern Clinics positions focus on hands-on learning under close supervision, primarily for students enrolled in medical assisting programs. Unlike permanent medical assistant jobs, these externships emphasize skill-building, clinical competency, and temporary assignments lasting up to six months, often within outpatient clinic environments.

Applicants should emphasize proficiency in basic laboratory testing, phlebotomy, patient preparation for exams, and accurate documentation in electronic health records. Keyboard navigation skills and the ability to follow direct supervision during procedures are crucial to succeed in these clinical externship roles.

Completing a Medical Extern Clinics placement offers practical exposure to clinical operations, fostering confidence and competence. This experience often acts as a stepping stone for full-time medical assistant roles in hospitals or clinics, enhancing employability by demonstrating hands-on patient care and teamwork abilities.

Portland's healthcare sector shows increased demand for medical externs due to expanding outpatient services. Candidates residing in Oregon or Washington have a competitive advantage because of Legacy Health’s residency requirement. Local programs often align with Legacy Health’s externship openings, supporting regional workforce development.

The hourly rate for this externship at Legacy Health is set at $17.00, which aligns well with Portland's market for medical assisting trainees. While this rate is modest compared to permanent roles, it reflects the educational nature of the position coupled with hands-on clinical training.

Candidates must hold a current American Heart Association BLS CPR certification, which is a standard requirement in the Portland healthcare community. This certification ensures readiness to respond to patient emergencies during clinical externships and aligns with local regulatory expectations.

Legacy Health incorporates Medical Assistant Extern Clinics as vital learning roles under the supervision of lead medical assistants or preceptors. These externs assist with patient care and clinic operations, contributing to team efficiency while gaining real-world experience within Legacy’s patient-centered care model.

Legacy Health’s externship is unique due to its strict residency requirements, structured “married state” preceptor model, and emphasis on supervised clinical skill development. This creates a supportive environment designed specifically for medical assisting students aiming to gain practical knowledge within a major regional healthcare system.
