Frequently asked questions

Phoenix's unique desert environment requires careful consideration of soil conditions and heat effects on underground transmission lines. Engineers must design duct bank configurations and manhole placements that withstand thermal expansion and shifting substrates, ensuring reliable and durable grid performance in this region.

While a BS degree from an ABET-accredited program is essential, local employers in Phoenix often value certifications related to electrical design standards and safety compliance, such as NESC or OSHA qualifications, which enhance an engineer's ability to navigate regional regulations and utility requirements.

Mastery of cable tensioning calculations, ampacity assessments, and duct bank layout design are fundamental. Proficiency with software tools for routing and structural loading calculations also accelerates career growth, enabling engineers to contribute effectively to complex underground transmission projects.

A key responsibility includes conducting cable selection studies to optimize performance and longevity. Engineers analyze bonding schemes to minimize electrical losses and ensure system safety, which involves detailed ampacity calculations and coordination with procurement teams to source appropriate materials.

Sargent & Lundy offers a hybrid work model supporting flexibility and innovation. Engineers benefit from a collaborative environment where they can influence design criteria and routing solutions, leveraging the company's award-winning benefits and commitment to employee well-being to foster long-term career advancement.

This position requires close coordination with engineers, designers, and drafters to develop comprehensive drawing packages and physical designs. The collaborative culture at Sargent & Lundy emphasizes multidisciplinary synergy to tackle challenges in underground transmission line routing and construction.

The compensation typically spans from $66,000 to $94,810 annually, reflecting the specialized skills and experience required. Competitive pay in Phoenix aligns with the local cost of living and industry demand for engineers skilled in underground transmission line design and project support.

Phoenix's expanding infrastructure projects have heightened the need for underground utility experts. Candidates with solid experience in transmission engineering and knowledge of regional regulations find a robust job market, though competition remains for roles emphasizing advanced cable design and trenchless installation expertise.

Professionals can progress to senior engineering roles by deepening expertise in high-voltage systems and project management. Gaining proficiency in software like Cymcap and engaging with emerging technologies in grid modernization further propels advancement opportunities within the transmission engineering field.

This role uniquely focuses on underground transmission systems, involving detailed duct bank and manhole design, cable pulling calculations, and trenchless installation methods. Unlike general electrical engineers, it demands specialized knowledge of high-voltage underground infrastructure and coordination with multiple stakeholders for successful project execution.
