Frequently asked questions

This position uniquely combines guiding a skilled BI and research data engineering team with driving innovation in data analytics solutions. At OHSU, it requires fostering a collaborative culture while steering complex systems like Epic Clarity and Caboodle to enhance research informatics capabilities.

Unlike typical BI roles, this management position demands balancing hands-on oversight of research data platforms with strategic team development in an academic medical setting. The role’s complexity lies in aligning technical delivery with stringent healthcare data governance and research objectives.

Candidates with Epic Caboodle Administrator certification and proven experience managing Epic’s data warehouses stand out. Expertise in healthcare analytics, data governance, and agile project management also significantly enhances employability in Portland’s competitive health IT market.

Success hinges on fostering innovation while ensuring compliance with clinical data protocols. Effective communication, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to nurture diverse, high-performing teams under evolving healthcare regulations are essential leadership traits for this environment.

OHSU’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion shapes this role by promoting a culture where diverse perspectives drive collaborative innovation. The manager must embed these values in team dynamics and external partnerships, enhancing both technical outcomes and workplace culture.

Based on market data, professionals in this role can expect salaries ranging from $120,000 to $145,000 annually. Factors influencing pay include experience with healthcare BI systems, leadership skills, and certifications like Epic Caboodle administration.

Portland’s growing healthcare tech sector sees strong demand for experienced BI managers, but the supply of candidates with specialized healthcare and Epic system expertise limits competition. This niche focus offers advantageous opportunities for qualified leaders.

While fully remote, maintaining frequent, clear communication is vital to coordinate with on-site research teams and IT divisions. Leveraging digital collaboration tools effectively bridges geographic gaps without compromising project timelines or team cohesion.

Key hurdles include integrating complex healthcare data sources like Epic Clarity and Caboodle, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and IRB policies, and scaling analytics platforms while supporting diverse research initiatives, all under tight project governance.

This role acts as a strategic bridge between IT capabilities and research objectives, leading data engineering efforts that empower clinical investigators. It ensures BI platforms align with evolving research needs, enabling data-driven discoveries in a healthcare academic setting.
