Both professions collaborate to ensure smooth patient transitions, but their approaches differ based on their specialized training and patient needs.
Key skills include strong knowledge of hospice regulations, cultural sensitivity to Alaska's diverse population, proficiency with mobile health technologies, and experience in home health settings. Navigators must adapt to variable weather conditions affecting travel and be skilled in building community partnerships for effective care transitions.
A typical day involves assessing new hospice admissions, coordinating with hospitals and families, developing patient-centered care plans, and educating community partners about hospice services. Navigators often travel to patients' homes, requiring flexibility and responsiveness to changing patient needs and environmental factors.
At Encompass Health, employees benefit from ongoing professional development, access to cutting-edge mobile health technologies, and a culture that values innovation and collaboration. The company’s commitment to ethical practices and employee wellness makes it an attractive workplace for hospice professionals in Anchorage.

Anchorage has a moderate demand for hospice nursing and social work professionals due to its aging population and limited specialized providers. While competition exists, candidates with hospice experience and Alaska licensure often find favorable opportunities, especially within well-established organizations like Encompass Health.
Beyond standard state licensure, certifications such as CHPN (Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse) or ACHP-SW (Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Social Worker) are highly regarded. Familiarity with Alaska’s healthcare regulations and cultural competency certifications can further boost employability in this region.
Professionals can progress by gaining specialized hospice certifications, taking leadership roles within home health agencies, or transitioning into clinical education and policy development. Anchorage’s healthcare community supports continual learning, enabling navigators to expand their impact and responsibilities.
