    Frequently asked questions

Professors specializing in maternal/fetal medicine at institutions like OHSU engage deeply in clinical care, research, and education within a specialized medical field, contrasting with broader academic roles. Their work often spans inpatient and outpatient services, combining hands-on patient care with scholarly activities unique to regional healthcare demands.

A Professor in maternal/fetal medicine must be board certified or eligible in this subspecialty and hold unrestricted medical licenses in Oregon and Washington. Their expertise covers comprehensive maternal/fetal clinical care, ultrasound, echocardiology, and administrative leadership, distinguishing them within ob/gyn departments.

At OHSU, Professors can pursue leadership positions, including medical direction at regional facilities, while engaging in multidisciplinary research and clinical education. The role offers pathways to contribute strategically within the department and influence regional maternal/fetal medicine practices.

Portland's academic medical sphere, with institutions like OHSU, exhibits moderate competition for specialized professors due to high standards in research, clinical expertise, and licensure. Demand aligns with regional healthcare needs, but candidates with board certification and multi-state licenses hold a distinct advantage.

Candidates must secure unrestricted medical licenses for both Oregon and Washington, reflecting the cross-state clinical coverage OHSU requires. Familiarity with regional regulatory frameworks, including state-specific healthcare compliance and credentialing, is essential for smooth faculty integration.

OHSU fosters a collaborative environment where Professors receive support from research staff and senior investigators, enabling an effective balance of patient care, academic writing, grant work, and presentations, especially in maternal/fetal medicine disciplines.

Professors at OHSU often engage in regional clinical coverage, including at Salem Health and other partner hospitals, and may assume leadership roles beyond teaching and research, such as medical direction and strategic planning within the department.

Professors in maternal/fetal medicine at OHSU typically earn between $180,000 and $230,000 annually, reflecting Portland's academic healthcare market. This range aligns with national trends for specialized faculty balancing clinical care and research in leading medical centers.

OHSU's emphasis on multi-site clinical coverage, active research collaboration, and leadership opportunities at affiliated regional hospitals differentiates its Professors. This integrated model enhances patient care outreach and academic influence across Oregon and Washington.

OHSU prioritizes a culturally competent workforce, encouraging faculty to foster inclusive educational environments and participate in public service initiatives. This focus enriches the maternal/fetal medicine program’s outreach and aligns with equitable healthcare delivery.
