Frequently asked questions

The Associate Professor role at OHSU blends clinical excellence with scholarly activity, emphasizing surgical independence and teaching responsibilities. Unlike some academic roles, it demands active inpatient/outpatient care in a renowned health system in Portland, integrating research and community health outreach, reflecting the city's healthcare landscape.

Proficiency in a broad range of obstetric and gynecological surgeries is crucial, including independent performance and learner instruction. These skills ensure comprehensive patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings, aligning with OHSU’s standards and Portland’s demand for advanced women's health expertise.

Prospective candidates should pursue board certification in obstetrics and gynecology, cultivate scholarly output through research or clinical education, and demonstrate commitment to community service. Achieving Oregon medical licensure and engaging with local healthcare initiatives strengthens an academic career in Portland.

OHSU values diversity and inclusion, expecting faculty to contribute to an equitable environment and engage actively in departmental governance and interdisciplinary education. Associate Professors are also encouraged to advance clinical research, reflecting OHSU's mission within Portland's progressive academic culture.

OHSU provides structured research support and senior mentorship to help faculty integrate clinical care with academic pursuits. The university fosters a collaborative environment where Associate Professors can contribute to teaching fellows, residents, and students, ensuring a balanced professional experience.

Compensation for Associate Professors in this specialty generally ranges between $150,000 and $210,000 annually in Portland, reflecting the region’s cost of living and demand for experienced clinicians who combine teaching, research, and patient care responsibilities.

Portland’s healthcare sector shows strong demand for skilled Associate Professors due to a growing population and emphasis on women's health. Candidates with surgical expertise and academic credentials often face moderate competition, with preference for those committed to clinical education and research.

OHSU’s main campus is accessible via public transit and major highways, but traffic congestion during peak hours can impact commute times. Many faculty optimize schedules to avoid rush hours or use Portland’s growing bike-friendly infrastructure for efficient travel.

Board certification or eligibility in obstetrics and gynecology, Oregon state licensure, and documented surgical experience are highly prioritized. Additional involvement in academic publishing or grant-supported research enhances candidacy significantly.

At OHSU, teaching encompasses multidisciplinary collaboration, including clinical education for fellows, residents, medical students, nurses, and APP trainees. Faculty provide both formal and informal feedback, fostering a comprehensive learning environment unique to this institution’s integrated care model.
