Frequently asked questions

This position uniquely blends cutting-edge vascular biology research with clinical ambulatory care, demanding leadership in both translational science and faculty mentorship. Unlike purely clinical roles, it requires maintaining a nationally funded research program while fostering multidisciplinary collaborations at an academic health center.

Candidates should have a proven international research reputation with sustained funding, an MD/DO license with active BLS/ACLS/DEA certifications, and demonstrated leadership in academic mentorship. Experience in translational research and a history of impactful publications are essential to thrive in such a competitive academic environment.

This role offers advancement through leading large-scale vascular biology programs, expanding interdisciplinary research, and influencing clinical practice integration. Success often leads to full professorship, departmental leadership, and increased influence in national research funding and policy shaping within academic medicine.

OHSU’s Knight Cardiovascular Institute emphasizes a multi-disciplinary strategy combining translational research with clinical application, aiming for early disease diagnosis and personalized therapy. This integration fosters innovative experimental methods backed by robust infrastructure, setting a collaborative and resource-rich environment for physician scientists.

Portland’s vibrant biomedical sector and OHSU’s leadership in cardiovascular research create synergistic opportunities for collaborations. The city’s commitment to healthcare innovation and diverse academic partnerships enhances access to funding, clinical trial networks, and cutting-edge technology for translational vascular biology research.

Salaries typically range from $180,000 to $230,000 annually, reflecting expertise in both clinical practice and federally funded research leadership. Compensation at OHSU may include additional benefits linked to academic rank, grant success, and clinical responsibilities, competitive within the Pacific Northwest academic health sector.

OHSU fosters a seamless interface between patient care and innovative research by supporting faculty who balance ambulatory clinical duties with independent, well-funded vascular biology programs. This synergy promotes translational science and enhances patient outcomes through evidence-based therapies and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Beyond the mandatory MD/DO license and active BLS, ACLS, and DEA certifications, OHSU values prior experience in academic health facilities, emphasizing credentials that support both clinical excellence and research leadership within a diverse, inclusive institutional framework.

Given Portland’s status as a growing biomedical hub and OHSU’s national reputation, competition is robust with candidates holding distinguished research records and leadership capabilities. Successful applicants typically demonstrate a blend of translational innovation, mentorship, and collaborative skills tailored to vascular medicine.

Daily responsibilities include designing innovative experiments, mentoring graduate students and fellows, managing research grants, collaborating with clinical teams, and dedicating time to ambulatory patient care. This balance ensures continuous advancement of vascular biology knowledge alongside direct patient impact.
