Frequently asked questions

This position demands expertise in nuclear electrical systems, including low and medium voltage distribution, along with leadership in multi-discipline coordination. Proficiency in nuclear plant design changes, protective relays, and client liaison skills sets it apart from general electrical engineering careers.

Career advancement often involves leading larger project teams, mastering regulatory compliance for nuclear facilities, and moving towards senior consultancy or managerial roles. Chicago’s robust nuclear sector offers pathways into specialized fields like SMRs or advanced reactor technologies.

Unlike entry roles focused on technical tasks, this consultant position requires leading project deliverables, mentoring team members, and managing client communications, blending technical expertise with strategic oversight in nuclear electrical engineering.

Sargent & Lundy stands out with its multi-decade nuclear expertise, award-winning benefits, and a hybrid work model. Employees engage with pioneering projects in clean energy while enjoying competitive compensation and strong professional development support.

The company emphasizes collaborative innovation, safety, and sustainability. Consultants benefit from a supportive environment that values technical excellence and fosters growth, complemented by comprehensive healthcare and work-life balance initiatives.

Chicago’s nuclear sector is competitive but thriving, driven by ongoing modernization projects and new reactor initiatives. Candidates with specialized nuclear electrical expertise and leadership experience are highly sought after in this region.

Possessing a PE license is highly advantageous locally, as is clearance for unescorted access to nuclear plants. Familiarity with Illinois nuclear regulations and safety standards significantly boosts employability in this market.

Compensation typically falls between $142,710 and $215,440 annually, reflecting experience and project complexity. This competitive range aligns with Chicago’s cost of living and the specialized skills required in nuclear engineering consultancy.

The hybrid model balances onsite collaboration with remote flexibility, supporting productivity and work-life harmony. It allows consultants to engage directly with multidisciplinary teams while leveraging remote days for focused design and analysis tasks.
