Frequently asked questions

The Doernbecher NICU RN position involves caring for critically ill newborns in a Level IV regional center, including complex cases from multiple states. This role demands advanced neonatal expertise, participation in cutting-edge research, and collaboration with pediatric subspecialists, setting it apart from typical neonatal nursing jobs.

Success in this NICU requires proficiency in neonatal resuscitation, familiarity with specialized PICC and lactation teams, and a deep understanding of high-risk newborn care. Experience with multi-state patient transports and the ability to adapt to night shifts exclusively also enhances performance.

Nurses here monitor critically ill neonates, assist with advanced procedures, support transport teams, and collaborate with fetal care specialists. The role includes continuous assessment in various hospital settings like MRI or cardiac labs, reflecting a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment.

Portland's growing healthcare sector and OHSU’s regional referral status create steady demand for skilled neonatal ICU nurses. Competition balances with ample opportunities, especially for those with Level II-IV NICU experience and certifications like NRP and BLS.

Beyond Oregon's RN license, neonatal nurses are often expected to hold Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification and maintain current BLS from the American Heart Association. Specialty neonatal certifications and bilingual skills can also enhance candidacy within Oregon.

OHSU provides structured orientation, fellowship options, and encourages BSN completion for associate degree nurses. Engagement in pioneering research and access to multidisciplinary teams promote professional growth and specialization within neonatal nursing.

OHSU combines a magnet-designated hospital environment with comprehensive benefits like full health coverage, pension plans, and tuition reimbursement. Its status as a Level IV NICU referral center also exposes nurses to complex cases and academic collaborations.

At OHSU, NICU RNs earn between $55.24 and $92.02 per hour, reflecting experience and education level. This range is competitive within the Pacific Northwest, especially considering the institution’s specialization in high-acuity neonatal care and comprehensive benefits.

This position focuses exclusively on night shifts, eliminating rotation stress. While challenging due to overnight hours, it offers consistent scheduling, free night parking, and opportunities to enjoy Portland's vibrant daytime activities, supporting a balanced lifestyle.

OHSU fosters diversity and inclusion, encouraging nurses from various backgrounds to contribute. Its commitment to equal opportunity and employee wellness programs creates a supportive environment that values cultural competence and professional respect.
