Frequently asked questions

In Atlanta, certifications like the Professional Engineering (PE) license and specialized training in NERC PRC standards significantly boost a Protective Relaying Engineering Consultant’s profile. Employers often prioritize candidates familiar with microprocessor-based relay systems common in Georgia’s power infrastructure.

Atlanta's energy sector is growing, but senior protective relay engineering roles remain niche, creating moderate competition. Professionals with over a decade of experience and hands-on skills in relay settings and compliance typically find strong demand with few equally qualified candidates.

A Protective Relaying Engineering Consultant 2 typically demonstrates advanced expertise in relay settings for HV/EHV substations, compliance with NERC PRC standards, and complex fault analysis. Unlike junior engineers, they handle comprehensive protection system calculations and client advisory independently.

Days blend on-site substation visits with remote analysis, focusing on relay settings development, event report reviews, and ensuring systems meet stringent safety regulations. Collaboration with clients and use of specialized software like ETAP and SKM shape daily responsibilities.

In Atlanta, compensation for this role typically ranges between $142,710 and $215,440 annually, reflecting the high responsibility level and specialized skills in power system protection and compliance with industry standards.

Sargent & Lundy offers a hybrid work setup combining on-site and remote flexibility, supported by award-winning benefits. Their focus on electrical analytical solutions and compliance expertise creates a collaborative environment distinct from typical consultancy roles.

Yes, Sargent & Lundy encourages professional growth through merit scholarships, licensure bonuses, and exposure to high-profile projects. Their culture prioritizes continuous learning, positioning consultants for leadership roles within power systems engineering.

Complexity in relay coordination and ensuring compliance with evolving NERC PRC standards can pose challenges. Balancing protection sensitivity without nuisance tripping demands deep understanding of system dynamics and precise software modeling.

The hybrid model offers flexibility that can enhance focus during remote analysis phases, while on-site days facilitate critical hands-on assessments and team collaboration. Atlanta’s traffic patterns make this balance especially beneficial for work-life integration.

This role involves detailed evaluations to ensure protection systems meet NERC PRC standards, requiring thorough event report analyses and system adjustments to maintain grid reliability and avoid penalties from regulatory bodies.
