The Division of Hematology & Medical Oncology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is seeking a highly-qualified translational or clinical researcher in Breast Oncology for the Knight Cancer Institute.

The successful candidate will ensure the university’s mission and goals of research, patient care, teaching, and outreach, and public service are met. Keys for the successful candidate shall be a Clinical or translational physician investigator, with the intellectual vision to develop and expand breast cancer research at the Knight Cancer Institute.
This position is eligible for endowment from the Leonard Schnitzer Endowment, provided by the Schnitzer family. This generous endowment from such a prominent and generous family will provide the selected, qualified candidate access to funds and will be tasked with marrying the Knight Cancer Institute’s mission for innovation and vision to expand OHSU’s breast cancer footprint, relevance in the market, and impact to patients. The successful applicant for this position will be nominated for this endowment, subject to OHSU policies governing such appointments, including length and term of the appointment, and subject to approval by the Dean of the School of Medicine and the OHSU Provost.
The current team in Breast Oncology is comprised of three talented, highly skilled physicians who collaborate across multiple disciplines to advance breast cancer research.
Function/Duties of Position
General:
- Oversee clinical and research expansion within the service line
- Work closely with leadership to identify and build collaborations across the Knight, marrying the existing strengths in research with a vision that builds the breast cancer service line to prominence in clinical care and research impact
- Direct the development of a comprehensive breast cancer program at the Knight Cancer Institute
- Establish an innovative research portfolio
- Coordinate with institutional leaders to advance clinical growth
- Build collaborations that advance the treatment of breast cancer
- Dedicate 50% of time to building clinical research
Promote Discovery (Clinical, Translational, and Basic Research):
- Leading by example, model excellence in research and interdisciplinary collaboration
- Manage resources in a manner which coordinates and integrates its programs with those of the Leonard Schnitzer Endowment to establish and maintain scholarly activities and research programs across the division
- Link science with health care in the care and treatment of complex disease by leveraging opportunities for investigator-initiated research, enrollment in clinical trials, and opportunities for translational outcomes related to research
- Experience expanding and building a research program through collaboration locally, regionally, and nationally
- Possess the ability to lead strong research programs that will advance the research agenda of the division
- Oversee clinical and research expansion within the service line
- Dedicate 50% of time to building clinical research

The duties of this position are in support of the missions, goals, and objectives of OHSU and the School of Medicine and include: participate in the education of medical students and house staff in accordance with assignments to the department by the Curriculum Committee and Chair; care of patients with breast cancer; establish and maintain a program of scholarly activity directed toward improved understanding of the causes, detection, and treatment of breast cancer; carry out basic research in division research space assigned by the Division Head; participate in administrative committees and councils of the OHSU as approved by the Chair and Division Head; engage in public service through consultative activities with non-university groups with knowledge and consent of the Chair and Division Head.
It is anticipated the position will be made up of the following components: Clinical, teaching research/academic, and inpatient service.
Required Qualifications
- MD, MD/Ph.D., or equivalent
- Must qualify for the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor at OHSU
- M.D. board certification in medical oncology and eligibility to obtain a license to practice medicine in Oregon
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative and creative individual with a distinguished publication and funding record in lung cancer research. Other key competencies:
- A proven physician leader who is intimately familiar with hospital organizations and functions;
- Ability to lead a strong lung cancer research program that advances the clinical and translational research agenda of the Knight;
- Experience managing clinical trials;
- Previous experience building or expanding a program, group, or initiative within an NCI designated cancer center;
- A commitment to developing and fostering a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to cancer services and patient-centered care;
- Record of excellence in patient care;
- Demonstrated ability to build strong, sustainable partnerships.
- Personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and experience working with and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment.
- Demonstrated business and financial management skills, including budget management and revenue generation.
