Frequently asked questions

A Protective Relaying Engineer 2 typically handles complex relay settings for HV/EHV substations and transmission lines, requiring deeper expertise in microprocessor-based relays and compliance with NERC standards, unlike entry-level roles that focus more on basic testing and support tasks.

Key skills include proficiency with relay software like SEL AcSELerator and GE Enervista, experience in generator and motor protection studies, plus familiarity with power system transient analysis tools such as PSS/E and ETAP, all highly valued in Westminster's energy sector.

Senior engineers often progress into lead protection engineer roles or managerial positions overseeing system protection projects, leveraging their expertise in relay settings and NERC compliance to influence large-scale power system reliability initiatives.

Sargent & Lundy stands out with its hybrid work model, comprehensive health plans, and award-winning benefits like tuition assistance and professional licensure bonuses, fostering a supportive environment tailored for senior engineers focused on work-life balance.

The company promotes collaboration and innovation, encouraging engineers to contribute to client compliance strategies and complex relay analyses while benefiting from flexible schedules and recognition programs, enhancing both professional growth and job satisfaction.

Westminster's growing energy infrastructure drives demand for experienced protective relaying engineers, with competition moderated by the specialized nature of power system protection skills and certifications preferred locally, such as PE licensure.

Westminster offers accessible transit routes and manageable traffic congestion, making hybrid work attractive by reducing daily commute stress and allowing senior engineers to balance on-site collaboration with remote productivity effectively.

Compensation for this role ranges between $95,840 and $147,870 annually, reflecting the seniority and specialized expertise required, alongside a comprehensive benefits package and eligibility for discretionary bonuses.

Engineers in this role actively evaluate and ensure client systems meet NERC PRC standards, performing detailed relay event analyses and protection studies that support regulatory adherence and enhance grid reliability.

Holding a Professional Engineering (PE) license and a master’s degree in electrical engineering notably strengthen candidacy, along with proficiency in transient analysis software and relay setting tools commonly used within the company.
