Frequently asked questions
Chicago's engineering market for mid-level civil engineers, especially in power plant projects, is moderately competitive due to ongoing infrastructure upgrades. Candidates with experience in stormwater systems and site development have an advantage, reflecting the city's focus on sustainable urban and industrial growth.
While a BSCE is essential, Illinois employers in the power sector often prefer candidates with Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification and progressing toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. These credentials demonstrate a commitment to industry standards and enhance eligibility for complex civil design tasks.
Mid-level civil engineers typically handle detailed design calculations, coordinate multi-disciplinary teams, and review vendor documentation, unlike entry-level roles that focus more on assistance and learning. They often lead site layout planning and ensure compliance with technical specifications in power plant environments.
Expanding expertise involves mastering civil 3D modeling, storm sewer system design, and integrating renewable energy technologies. Engaging in site visits for construction coordination and gaining experience with carbon capture or hydrogen power projects can significantly broaden technical and industry knowledge.
This mid-level title signals a transition from foundational skills to greater project autonomy and technical responsibility. It often serves as a stepping stone to senior engineering roles, with opportunities to lead design efforts, mentor junior staff, and contribute to complex infrastructure initiatives.
Sargent & Lundy provides comprehensive health plans, flexible hybrid work schedules, and merit scholarships, fostering a supportive environment.
