Department Overview
The Knight Cardiovascular Institute (KCVI) is recognized as a top integrated center for cardiovascular clinical care, translational research and professional training in all aspects of heart and vascular disease. Guided by a multi-disciplinary approach, researchers and clinicians drive a vibrant translational research program, which focuses on delivering the latest knowledge and cutting edge care to patients. Specifically, research at KCVI seeks to improve patient outcomes by achieving earlier diagnosis of disease, more accurate monitoring of its progression, and tailoring therapy to the molecular basis of disease.
Function/Duties of Position
The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. They will be joining a dynamic Center that focuses on a multidisciplinary approach to cardiovascular risk reduction through both collaboration with basic scientists and state-of-the art therapeutics. Training in the physiology and therapeutics of lipids, glucose metabolism, and inflammation preferred (such as a fellowship in Preventive Cardiology or Cardiometabolic Medicine). Obesity medicine principles and therapeutics are commonly employed by our group and prospective candidates will be expected to acquire these skills.
Clinical: Majority of your time will be spent clinically in Preventive Cardiology. The general clinical duties will include ambulatory clinics, approximately 6 weeks (generally 2 weeks each rotation) serving as an attending physician on the inpatient cardiology services (CCU or consult), as well as supporting non-invasive imaging, including ECHO, CT and MRI imaging, with a focus on patients with non-invasive subclinical atherosclerosis. Serving as an attending in our outreach programs may also be required depending on availability and the divisional needs. Providers are also expected to take a fair share of call.
Research: We expect providers in this role will be involved in clinical studies in collaboration with colleagues in the section, and will work to develop a portfolio of clinical research activities funded from external sources. Additional non-clinical time will be provided commensurate with funding to support that effort.
Education: As teaching is an important portion of the cardiology mission you will be responsible for the teaching of medical students, residents and fellows.

Frequently asked questions
In Portland, preventive cardiologists benefit greatly from expertise in non-invasive imaging techniques like echo, CT, and MRI, alongside proficiency in managing lipid, glucose metabolism, and inflammation-related cardiovascular risks. Familiarity with obesity medicine therapeutics is also increasingly valuable given regional patient profiles.
This position balances clinical work in ambulatory and inpatient cardiology with active involvement in clinical research. Providers collaborate on externally funded studies, enabling advances in early diagnosis and tailored therapies, while dedicating non-clinical time to developing research portfolios.
Compensation for this role generally ranges between $220,000 to $320,000 annually, reflecting Portland's competitive academic cardiology market. Factors such as research funding, clinical workload, and board certification status can influence final salary offers.
Besides an active MD/DO license and DEA certification, board eligibility or certification in cardiology is essential. Experience or fellowship training in preventive cardiology or cardiometabolic medicine is highly valued, aligning with OHSU's advanced cardiovascular care focus.
Portland offers a strong academic cardiology landscape, though slightly less saturated than major hubs like Boston or New York. Candidates with interdisciplinary research skills and preventive cardiology expertise often stand out due to local demand for integrated cardiovascular care.
OHSU emphasizes a multidisciplinary model, merging clinical expertise with translational research and teaching. Faculty are expected to contribute to innovative patient care, collaborative research, and education, fostering a dynamic environment for cardiovascular risk reduction.
Depending on divisional needs and availability, faculty may serve as attending physicians in community outreach initiatives, which enhances patient access to preventive care and supports OHSU's mission to expand cardiovascular health services beyond the main campus.
This role focuses heavily on ambulatory preventive cardiology clinics, inpatient consults, and non-invasive imaging centered on subclinical atherosclerosis. Unlike general cardiology, there's greater emphasis on metabolic risk factors and obesity medicine principles within patient care.
While not mandatory, prior experience in an academic health setting is preferred as it aligns well with the role’s teaching and research responsibilities. Candidates accustomed to academic workflows tend to adapt more quickly to OHSU’s multidisciplinary environment.
