Frequently asked questions

Charlotte's growing infrastructure and energy sector have increased demand for grid-focused electrical engineers. However, experienced professionals with medium and high voltage substation design skills remain highly sought after, making competition moderate but favoring candidates with specialized expertise in power systems engineering.

While a PE license is valued, practical knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, and NEMA standards, plus familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code (ANSI C2), significantly enhance employability in North Carolina's grid engineering roles. These credentials demonstrate compliance expertise crucial for local utility projects.

A Senior Electrical Engineer 2 typically commands deep experience in medium voltage power system design, substation layouts, and grounding calculations. They manage multiple projects, mentor peers, and engage in complex troubleshooting, whereas junior engineers often focus on foundational tasks and skill-building under supervision.

Daily tasks often involve resolving intricate electrical design conflicts, ensuring protection/control schemes are robust, reviewing single line diagrams, and coordinating closely with designers. Managing project timelines while aligning technical accuracy with client standards also demands significant attention.

Progression often leads from project-focused roles to leadership positions such as Senior Facilities Engineer or Senior Infrastructure Engineer. Expanding expertise in substation design and obtaining a PE license can open pathways to managerial roles overseeing larger power grid service projects.

Sargent & Lundy offers a collaborative environment emphasizing peer learning and community practice, combined with hybrid work flexibility. Their award-winning benefits and focus on work-life balance distinguish them from competitors, appealing to engineers seeking both technical challenges and a supportive culture.

Engineers often engage in high voltage substation projects requiring detailed electrical design and troubleshooting. Opportunities to travel to client sites and participate in multi-disciplinary teams provide enrichment, reflecting Sargent & Lundy’s commitment to hands-on, impactful grid modernization efforts.

The compensation range typically spans from $95,840 to $147,870 annually, aligning with Charlotte’s cost of living and demand for experienced electrical engineers in the utility sector. This reflects competitive pay for professionals skilled in medium voltage power system design and project management.

Spending three days onsite fosters direct collaboration on complex substation designs, while two remote days provide focused time for report writing and calculations. This balance supports both teamwork and individual deep work, enhancing overall project efficiency and engineer satisfaction.

Proficiency in MS Office is essential, but additional skills such as AutoCAD for substation layout and familiarity with specialized engineering tools for grounding and protection calculations are advantageous, demonstrating readiness to handle detailed electrical design tasks effectively.
