Department Overview

The Imaging Center MRI Technologist performs a comprehensive range of diagnostic MRI that utilizes a variety of equipment for use in diagnosis and treatment of patient disease. Imaging Center MRI Technologists work with pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. The Imaging Center MRI Technologist performs MRI exams at all Imaging Center locations.

Function/Duties of Position

MRI Imaging:

  • Provides quality images, using optimal skills and knowledge of equipment.
  • Performs quality diagnostic studies with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Positions patients for MRI examinations with a high regard for their safety, care, and comfort.
  • Prescreens patients and all related personnel regarding MRI compatibility standards for safe entry into the static magnetic field. If there is any question regarding MRI compatibility, the MRI safety team will be consulted.
  • Performs implant review and can follow FDA (Food and Drug Administration) labeling guidelines.
  • Understands MRI physics with the ability to implement imaging parameters on a case-by-case basis.
  • Understands normal anatomical cross-sectional images.
  • Must be able to decide on the completeness and quality of the patient’s studies when working independently of a Radiologist.
  • Prepares and instructs patients for diagnostic study using age-appropriate communication skills.
  • Optimizes each image during the examination to obtain the highest quality study with the least discomfort to the patient.
  • Must be able to perform all ranges of exams after completion of technical competencies.
  • Shows competent knowledge and skills in using all MRI scanners and peripheral equipment in the Outpatient Imaging Centers.
  • Continues to stay current regarding new MRI technology, hardware, and software upgrades. 
  • Knowledge of compatibility and safety of equipment used for patient care inside the scan suite. (O2, monitoring, wheelchairs, stretchers and IV stands).

Documentation:

  • Verifies complete documentation of all pertinent information to provide accurate and timely service to customers.
  • Responsible for correctly identifying patients by complying with Imaging dept. Patient Identification Policy.
  • Labels images completely with patient demographics, position, or other required documentation.
  • Follows through with all aspects of scanning duties to provide efficient and timely completion of examinations with correct data entry, begin and complete with correct billing and verification that images are in PACS.
  • Technologists prescreen all patients for sensitivity to medication materials.
  • Implements the correct types of contrast and injection factors on a case- by-case basis.
  • Films or burns a CD of selected images on hard copy in a manner, which best illustrates anatomy and pathology specific to each individual examination.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved magnetic resonance imaging course that meets current qualifications to apply for and take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) board exam in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) upon hire. Must be ARRT (MR) certified by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists, or ARMRIT American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists within 6 months of hire.
  • Will consider qualified new graduate students that meet the education requirements.
  • Must be licensed by the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging.
  • Must have current approved BLS card.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved CT (Computed Tomography) training program. Registered and licensed in CT or be qualified to sit for the AARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) (CT) exam.
  • 1 Year of previous hospital experience.
  • CT experience preferred.

Additional Details

This position works in a busy environment with frequent interruptions, multiple demands and continuous interaction with patients and other medical professionals. It requires being exposed to chemical solutions, and human tissue/fluids.
