Frequently asked questions

Interns typically engage in mechanical systems analysis, preparing engineering calculations and drawings. At Sargent & Lundy, you might work on modifying power plant components or industrial systems, gaining hands-on experience with practical engineering tasks relevant to energy and industrial projects.

This internship exposes you to cutting-edge energy projects including renewable technologies and carbon capture. Collaborating with senior engineers, you build technical skills and industry knowledge, laying a solid foundation for a future in energy-focused mechanical engineering roles.

Expect to assist with project data tracking, engineering report preparation, and design support. The role involves teamwork on power plant upgrades and industrial system enhancements, offering a mix of technical documentation and practical engineering challenges.

Chicago hosts a vibrant engineering job market, with numerous internships in energy and industrial sectors. While competition is notable due to the city's status as a manufacturing and energy hub, proactive applications, especially for firms like Sargent & Lundy, improve chances significantly.

While formal certifications are less common for internships, familiarity with CAD software, mechanical systems analysis, and strong communication skills are highly valued. Local employers also appreciate candidates who understand regional energy regulations and sustainability trends.

Sargent & Lundy stands out by blending large-scale power plant design experience with a commitment to decarbonization technologies. Interns benefit from exposure to cutting-edge projects in carbon capture and renewable integration, setting it apart from typical industrial internships.

This role emphasizes energy sector innovations, including involvement with combined cycle plants and renewable energy projects. The chance to work closely with seasoned engineers on real-world decarbonization initiatives offers a distinctive learning environment.

Hourly wages range from $17.50 to $27.00, which aligns well with regional internship pay for mechanical engineering roles. Coupled with comprehensive benefits like healthcare, tuition assistance, and paid leave, this package is competitive in the Chicago market.

Interns may encounter complexities in applying theoretical knowledge to large-scale industrial systems. Navigating project timelines, technical documentation, and interdisciplinary coordination requires adaptability and strong communication within a fast-evolving energy sector.

Given the hands-on nature of power plant and industrial facility projects, remote work is limited. Interns are expected to be onsite in Chicago to collaborate directly with engineering teams and engage in project execution activities.
