Frequently asked questions

Portland's healthcare sector shows a steady demand for experienced Respiratory Therapist II professionals, particularly in pediatric specialty care. Given the city's growing population and emphasis on advanced respiratory treatments, competition is moderate, with employers valuing ICU and pediatric experience highly.

In Oregon, aside from the national RRT credential, hospitals often prefer candidates holding Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification due to the pediatric focus in many regional facilities. State licensure combined with BLS is mandatory, and advanced certifications can boost job prospects.

A Respiratory Therapist II typically leads clinical initiatives, mentors new staff, and handles complex cardiopulmonary cases. They serve as clinical resources and may precept peers, reflecting a higher accountability level beyond routine respiratory care duties common in entry roles.

This mid-level role demands not only proficient patient care but also active involvement in departmental committees and special projects. Respiratory Therapist IIs influence care protocols and guide less experienced therapists, showcasing growth in leadership and autonomous clinical judgment.

Professionals in this role often advance toward supervisory positions, clinical educator roles, or specialized respiratory therapy director tracks. Gaining pediatric ICU experience, contributing to research, and pursuing further certifications can accelerate upward mobility within pediatric-focused institutions.

Respiratory Therapist IIs at Shriners Children's Florida collaborate closely with diverse healthcare teams, contributing to evidence-based practices and patient-centered care. Their leadership extends beyond bedside care, involving educational roles and participation in innovative research projects that impact global pediatric respiratory health.

Shriners Children's Florida offers comprehensive benefits from day one, including medical coverage, 403(b) and Roth 403(b) retirement plans with matching, and various insurance options. Their approach emphasizes professional growth with tuition reimbursement and a supportive work culture tailored for respiratory therapists.

Night-shift Respiratory Therapist IIs in Portland at Shriners Children's Florida earn between $36.82 and $55.22 per hour. Compensation scales with years of experience and departmental equity, rewarding advanced skills and specialized ICU or pediatric respiratory care expertise.

Daily duties include managing life-support equipment, conducting thorough respiratory assessments, and tailoring care plans for critically ill children. This role demands swift communication with families and healthcare teams, alongside mentoring junior staff and ensuring stringent infection control.

While Portland offers solid opportunities with a focus on pediatric care and community hospitals, New York's market is broader but more saturated, often requiring additional certifications. Portland’s demand favors candidates with pediatric ICU experience, providing a balanced environment with competitive wages and less competition.
