Frequently asked questions

An Advanced Practice Provider Primary Inpatient delivers specialized care by independently managing neurological patients, performing procedures, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and responding to urgent clinical needs. This role demands expertise in inpatient neurosurgical environments, ensuring seamless patient transitions from admission through discharge.

Candidates must hold Oregon state licensure—either as a Nurse Practitioner with acute care certification or as a Physician Assistant with active NCCPA certification. Both require DEA registration for prescribing privileges, aligned with Oregon’s nurse practice act or medical board standards for inpatient care.

This role offers growth into specialized neurosurgical care leadership, clinical education, or advanced research roles. With experience, APPs can transition into department lead positions, program development, or clinical coordination, leveraging their acute care expertise within academic medical centers.

OHSU emphasizes continuous learning and inclusivity, providing neurosurgical APPs with access to cutting-edge procedures, interdisciplinary collaboration, and educational opportunities. The environment fosters mentorship from seasoned faculty, enhancing clinical skills grounded in innovation and patient-centered care.

OHSU fosters a collaborative culture where APPs work closely with surgeons, nurses, and support staff, emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusion. APPs are empowered as vital team members contributing to patient care excellence, quality improvement projects, and educational initiatives.

In Portland, Advanced Practice Providers in neurosurgical inpatient roles generally earn between $110,000 and $140,000 annually. Salary varies with experience, certifications, and institutional factors, reflecting the specialized skills and responsibilities involved in comprehensive neurological patient care.

OHSU’s status as Oregon’s only academic health center means APPs encounter complex cases and pioneering procedures not typical elsewhere locally. This can demand rapid adaptability, advanced clinical judgment, and engagement in research or teaching activities beyond standard inpatient care.

Portland’s growing healthcare sector and OHSU’s leadership in neuroscience drive steady demand for APPs with acute care expertise. Competitive recruitment reflects the city’s emphasis on innovative care models and interdisciplinary collaboration within a diverse patient population.

This role blends independent patient management, procedural execution, and coordination of complex neurological care plans. Unlike outpatient or generalist positions, it requires 7-day clinical coverage, urgent response capabilities, and close collaboration with surgical teams in high-acuity settings.

Working at OHSU exposes APPs to leading-edge neuroscience innovations, multidisciplinary education, and quality improvement projects. This fosters advanced clinical proficiency, leadership skills, and academic involvement, positioning providers for future roles in neurosurgical care or healthcare administration.
