Frequently asked questions

OHSU’s emergency medicine physician role uniquely blends high-acuity clinical duties with teaching medical students and research participation, especially in critical areas like cardiac arrest recovery. This integrated focus on patient care, education, and innovation sets it apart from typical academic physician jobs in Portland.

Candidates need an MD with emergency medicine residency, ACLS certification, and an Oregon medical license. Board certification or eligibility in ABEM or ABOEM is crucial, alongside proficiency in electronic medical records and strong communication skills to manage Portland’s diverse, high-volume emergency department.

Daily tasks include managing complex, time-sensitive emergencies like cardiac arrests, coordinating with interdisciplinary teams, teaching medical students, and engaging in clinical research. The fast-paced environment demands quick decision-making while ensuring quality care and patient safety in a busy, urban hospital setting.

This partnership fosters a multidisciplinary approach with robust coordination between emergency and hospitalist teams. It promotes an academic environment within a busy urban ED, enabling physicians to contribute to impactful research while delivering culturally competent care to Portland’s diverse patient population.

Emergency physicians at OHSU benefit from a supportive academic setting with access to innovative clinical trials like the ICE-CAP study, extensive teaching roles, and a diverse patient base. This environment encourages professional growth beyond clinical duties, unlike many purely community-based emergency jobs.

Emergency medicine physicians in academic roles in Portland typically earn between $250,000 and $325,000 annually, depending on experience and certifications. This range reflects competitive compensation considering the high-volume, urban clinical demands and academic responsibilities.

Portland’s demand for emergency physician assistants is strong due to its growing population and multiple trauma centers. Near Adventist Health Portland, competition is moderate, with opportunities favoring those who hold ACLS certification and have experience in fast-paced emergency settings.

Beyond the Oregon MD license, emergency medicine professionals should maintain current ACLS certification and consider DEA registration for medication prescribing. Familiarity with Oregon’s electronic medical records systems and cultural competency training also improves integration within Portland’s healthcare landscape.

OHSU encourages physicians to engage in cutting-edge research projects, such as the ICE-CAP study on CNS cooling post-cardiac arrest. The role combines clinical responsibilities with structured teaching and scholarly activities, fostering academic advancement within a collaborative emergency department.

Candidates must demonstrate emergency medicine clinical expertise, strong communication, and the ability to manage high-acuity cases under pressure. Experience with diverse patient populations and proficiency in health IT systems are vital to meet OHSU’s standards for quality care and teamwork.
