Master Mechanic, Plant Engineering
Full Time, 80 Hours Per Pay Period, Day Shift
Position includes taking after-hours call.

Job Objectives:
Provide maintenance of Methodist Medical Center buildings and grounds, equipment and distribution lines for steam, hot water, plumbing and sanitation.

Responsibilities
- Performs preventive maintenance repairs, as prescribed by the preventive maintenance program, mechanical repairs to machines and equipment; masonry work; plumbing; heating; batteries; boilers; water treatment; plastering; and sheet metal.
- Oversees and ensures safe and efficient operation of physical plant and hospital utilities.
- Observes mechanical/electrical devices in operation to locate causes of trouble; dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts; and repairs or replaces defective parts.
- Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments or installs special functional and structural parts.
- Maintains, lubricates, and performance tests equipment.
- On occasion, sets up and operates lathes, drill press, grinder and other metal working tools to make and repair parts
- Initiates purchase orders for parts and machines as required.
- Performs duties of boiler attendant as needed
- Installs, inspects, operates and repairs refrigeration equipment for preserving food, making ice, cooling water and air conditioning for all hospital buildings; maintains air conditioner filters.
- Assumes "on call" duties.
- NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties as assigned.
- HEALTH/SAFETY/COMPETENCE: Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to customer or patient population.. Must demonstrate competency of the specific functions described in the performance continuum and skill checklists.
Qualifications
Education/Knowledge/Skills:
Must have a high school diploma or an equivalent certificate (GED); must be able to read with comprehension, write legibly, perform simple mathematic calculations, and follow oral and written instructions as required. Prior courses in blue print reading, electricity, machine shop, mathematics, plastering, construction principles, masonry and plumbing are required. Must be familiar with building maintenance techniques, equipment and operation of power plants, plumbing and heating systems, sanitation, refrigeration, electrical systems, and fire and safety regulations and procedures. Should be familiar with work and limitations of various crafts primarily involved in building maintenance.
Must have the ability to detect malfunctioning of equipment and possible fire and safety hazards; to work with a minimum of supervision; to work under emergency conditions; and to maintain concentration with attention to detail for prolonged periods of time, sometimes under stressful conditions.
Experience:
Five years of progressive experience in maintenance work is required, or a 2-year degree (or completion of a 12 – 24 month vocational certification) in a related field accompanied by a minimum of one year maintenance/construction work experience. Must be familiar with building maintenance techniques, equipment and operations of power plants, plumbing and heating systems, sanitation, refrigeration, electrical systems and fire and safety regulations and procedures.
Licensure Requirement:
E.P.A., C.F.C. Refrigerant level II certification is required.
