Responsibilities
We are currently seeking a Commercial Lines Underwriting Trainee. This is a developmental position. The selected candidate will learn the fundamental principles of underwriting commercial lines insurance. This individual will gain an understanding of the underwriting thought process and learn to utilize underwriting guidelines, procedures, rating manual rules and insurance laws and regulations. The Trainee will participate in a training program involving in-person classroom instruction and self-study combined with on-the-job shadowing that will provide the opportunity to learn the business. Promotion opportunity to an Underwriter position exists after successful completion of the training program.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following essential duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.
- Learn to process and document new and renewal business through successful completion of Training Objectives, with increased levels of responsibility;
- Develop proficiency in insurance theories and practices;
- Input select data into rating system(s);
- Learn how to evaluate, select, and price commercial risks;
- Develop skills in negotiating price, coverage, and terms;
- Learn how to communicate to and build relationships with agents;
- Provide timely, courteous and efficient service to all internal and external clients; and
- Travel to other BMAG locations to make connections.
- Completes work and reading projects and pass any required exams.
The successful candidate will provide technical support to underwriting staff, participate in various underwriting and educational activities, and be responsible for:
- Aiding in the building of superior distribution partnerships with agents and brokers;
- Analyzing applications, determining acceptability of risk in accordance with Company guidelines and practices in order to assist underwriting with the appropriate underwriting decisions;
- Analyzing quality, quantity, and profitability of risks underwritten and preparing reports for underwriting and management review;
- Assist in the management of the commercial property and casualty lines of business to achieve the goals and objectives established. Ensuring continued profitable growth;
- Execute special projects in pursuit of enhanced operational excellence, delivery of valuable external marketing materials, and portfolio analysis reporting;
- Self-study in pursuit of appropriate designations as defined by management;
- Assisting with product development in creation of innovative products and service to introduce to the market;
- Interact with the marketplace through frequent attendance of regional client and producer meetings.

Education:
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited university or college;
- Prior working experience and/or internships within the Insurance field preferred;
- Advanced insurance education preferred (ex. AU, AAI, CIC, CPCU);
- While preferred, no prior Insurance experience is required;
