Frequently asked questions

This position demands flexibility to navigate different ICU settings across several Omaha metro hospitals, ensuring seamless patient care. Familiarity with diverse protocols and quick acclimation to varying team dynamics are essential for providing consistent critical care as part of the float pool.

Beyond core ICU competencies, a Regional Float ICU RN excels in adaptability, rapid clinical assessment, and multi-unit coordination. They must be adept at swiftly integrating into different hospital cultures while applying advanced life support techniques to diverse patient populations.

Floating among multiple ICUs enhances clinical versatility and broadens exposure to various patient cases, accelerating skill development. This diversity can position nurses for leadership roles or specialized certifications, marking a strong trajectory in critical care nursing careers.

Omaha's healthcare sector shows steady demand for ICU nurses, with moderate competition. Hospitals value candidates with multi-unit float experience and ICU tenure, making regional float roles attractive for nurses seeking dynamic and secure employment in this market.

Given the spread of CHI Health campuses in Omaha and nearby cities like Papillion and Council Bluffs, RNs must plan for variable commute times. Traffic patterns during shift changes and the need for rapid response to understaffed units require flexible transportation strategies.

Active licensure in Nebraska, Iowa, or a Nurse Licensure Compact state is mandatory, with ACLS certification typically required within months of hire. Additional behavioral health or specialty ICU certifications could enhance placement opportunities within CHI's diverse facilities.

CHI offers substantial sign-on bonuses and educational assistance, including loan repayment up to $10,000, fostering continuous learning. Their emphasis on social justice and health equity aligns with initiatives encouraging nurses to innovate and expand their critical care expertise.

Besides a 25% hourly differential for float assignments, CHI provides facility and shift preference on a first-come basis, promoting work-life balance. The opportunity to serve multiple campuses enhances clinical exposure, coupled with strong organizational values supporting nurse wellbeing.

Registered Nurses in ICU float roles in Omaha typically earn between $75,000 and $95,000 annually, factoring in the 25% hourly differential. Compensation reflects the specialized skill set required and the flexible, multi-site nature of the work environment.

While new graduate ICU residencies are emerging, float ICU roles often require at least two years of critical care experience. However, CHI's educational assistance may support nurses transitioning through residency programs to eventually qualify for float assignments.
