This role requires flexibility to attend client meetings and project sites, ensuring seamless coordination between office-based engineering and field operations for grid modernization.

This consultant level demands deep expertise in utility transmission substation design, project leadership over multi-disciplinary teams, and mastery of standards like NEC and IEEE. Unlike entry roles, it emphasizes strategic coordination, budget management, and client engagement within complex high voltage grid projects.

Professionals in this role can advance into senior project management, engineering director roles, or specialized consulting focused on grid modernization. Growth hinges on leadership experience, advanced certifications, and demonstrated success in managing large-scale substation engineering teams.

At Sargent & Lundy, a commitment to employee well-being fosters a collaborative environment, encouraging innovation in substation engineering projects. The company’s award-winning benefits and flexible work options support engineers in balancing complex project demands with personal health and career development.

Handling projects at Sargent & Lundy involves navigating diverse client requirements and coordinating cross-disciplinary teams under strict timelines. Consultants must adeptly resolve conflicts, ensure compliance with evolving industry standards, and maintain high-quality deliverables across geographically dispersed substations.

The position offers between $142,710 and $215,440 annually in Columbus. Variations depend on experience, certifications like PE or PMP, project complexity, and leadership roles. Local market demand for high voltage substation experts also influences competitive pay scales.

Columbus utilities highly value FE or PE licenses due to regulatory and safety compliance. PMP certification can further enhance project leadership credentials. Familiarity with regional standards and MISOs facility studies also bolsters a candidate’s standing in this competitive market.

Columbus exhibits a robust need for substation engineers driven by grid expansion and modernization projects. Compared to smaller Ohio cities, it offers more diverse opportunities and higher salaries, reflecting its status as an energy hub and center for utility infrastructure development.

Daily activities include leading design teams, reviewing engineering calculations, coordinating with clients, and ensuring compliance with electrical and structural codes. Consultants troubleshoot grid challenges and oversee detailed design execution from concept through construction closeout.
