Frequently asked questions

In Dayton, OH, this role is pivotal for enhancing pediatric nursing by providing targeted education and competency development. The generalist ensures nurses stay updated with the latest evidence-based practices, especially in critical care areas like burns and reconstructive surgery, which are highly specialized within local healthcare settings.

Specializing in pediatric burn care demands a BSN and preferably an MSN, combined with at least three years in pediatric critical care or burns. Experience with staff development and training sharpens ability to deliver tailored educational programs aligned with Ohio's healthcare standards and patient needs.

Daily tasks include designing and delivering orientation sessions, guiding clinical nursing students, and acting as a clinical consultant. They coordinate competency evaluations and support nursing staff in applying innovative, evidence-based pediatric care techniques, fostering an environment of continuous learning.

Certifications like the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) or specialty credentials in pediatric critical care are highly regarded locally. These credentials demonstrate advanced expertise, aligning with Ohio's focus on specialized nursing education especially within pediatric and surgical units.

Dayton's healthcare sector shows steady demand for nursing educators due to its strong pediatric specialty services. However, candidates with pediatric critical care experience and advanced degrees find themselves at an advantage amid moderate local competition.

On average, professionals in this role in Dayton earn between $75,000 and $90,000 annually. Variations depend on experience, education level, and the complexity of the pediatric specialty, with Shriners Children's Florida offering competitive compensation to attract top talent.

Shriners Children's Florida integrates this role by emphasizing compassionate education, critical thinking, and evidence-based training. The generalist fosters professional growth that directly enhances family-centered pediatric care, aligning closely with the organization's values of integrity and resilience.

The position uniquely blends clinical instruction with innovative staff development framed by a multi-disciplinary approach. Unlike some hospitals, Shriners prioritizes global impact research and holistic patient care, requiring the generalist to be both an educator and a clinical consultant within a specialized pediatric burn and reconstructive surgery environment.

Professionals often progress toward leadership in nursing education, clinical nurse specialist roles, or administrative positions overseeing staff development programs. Gaining expertise in pediatric specialties like burn care can also open doors to research or policy-making roles within healthcare organizations.

New graduates should seek pediatric critical care experience and pursue certifications such as the CNE. Engaging in mentorship programs and gaining familiarity with staff development frameworks help build essential skills to thrive as clinical nursing consultants in Ohio's pediatric hospitals.
