Frequently asked questions

Candidates typically need at least five years of detailed experience with wiring designs, including single-line and relay diagrams, especially for medium-voltage and 480V systems. Proficiency in tools like MicroStation or AutoCAD is crucial to meet nuclear power plant standards.

This position focuses on nuclear-specific safety standards, producing precise wiring schematics critical for power plant operations. Unlike general electrical design jobs, it demands familiarity with nuclear facility protocols, unescorted access certification, and collaborative work with multidisciplinary nuclear teams.

Designers support upgrades by creating and revising electrical schematics to integrate digital control systems and updated equipment. Their work ensures legacy plants meet modern safety and efficiency benchmarks, facilitating smooth transitions to advanced reactor technologies.

Beyond competitive pay, Sargent & Lundy provides hybrid work flexibility, comprehensive health coverage, and generous paid leave. Their top workplace awards reflect a culture that values employee well-being, including tuition assistance and professional licensure bonuses tailored for nuclear engineering roles.

Sargent & Lundy emphasizes hybrid work schedules and cross-disciplinary collaboration on cutting-edge nuclear projects like SMRs and coal-to-nuclear conversions. Their longstanding industry presence and safety-first mindset offer a unique blend of tradition and innovation.

Chicago hosts a specialized but competitive market for nuclear wiring designers due to regional nuclear facilities and engineering hubs. Demand is steady, with opportunities tied to plant upgrades and new reactor projects, making it a viable location for career growth in this niche.

While specific certifications may vary, possessing drafting credentials, nuclear safety training, and proficiency with AutoCAD or MicroStation boosts employability. Understanding Illinois' regulatory environment and nuclear plant security requirements also adds valuable local expertise.

Sargent & Lundy offers a salary range from approximately $54,420 to $78,410 for this role. This compensation reflects experience, technical skill, and local market factors, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package designed to support work-life balance.
