    Frequently asked questions

Port Huron's healthcare sector shows steady demand for speech therapists, especially in community hospitals like Lake Huron Medical Center. While competition exists, candidates with hospital experience and current licensure tend to have an advantage in securing per diem or casual roles.

Besides the required state license in speech-language pathology, hospitals in Michigan, including Lake Huron Medical Center, highly value BLS certification for healthcare providers. Advanced degrees like an MS in speech-language pathology can also strengthen your candidacy.

Proficiency in evaluating speech, language, cognition, and swallowing disorders is key. Strong treatment planning, patient communication, and adaptability to diverse clinical needs are essential skills that enhance therapy outcomes and professional growth.

Speech therapists can advance by specializing in areas like pediatric or neurological disorders, moving into supervisory roles, or contributing to therapy program development. Pursuing advanced degrees and certifications often opens doors to academic or managerial positions.

Lake Huron Medical Center emphasizes a supportive environment with recognized safety and quality standards. Casual scheduling with Saturday rotations may differ from fixed shifts elsewhere, offering flexibility but requiring readiness for varied hours.

The center encourages ongoing professional development through access to specialized programs and collaborative care teams. Being part of Prime Healthcare also provides resources for continuous learning and compliance with performance standards.

Speech therapists in Port Huron typically earn between $65,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and employment status. Per diem roles may offer higher hourly rates but with less schedule predictability.

Many assume speech therapy is solely for children, but therapists also treat adults with cognitive and swallowing disorders. The role demands multifaceted evaluation and tailored interventions beyond just speech correction.

Casual positions lack guaranteed hours, requiring flexibility to cover shifts such as Saturday rotations. This setup suits professionals seeking varied schedules but demands readiness to adapt to changing clinical needs.

This role combines work in a community hospital with a commitment to safety and quality recognized by national awards. It offers diverse patient populations and integration with a broad medical group, enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration.
