Frequently asked questions

Englewood, CO hosts a growing demand for water resource engineers, especially in energy and industrial sectors. Competition is moderate, with employers valuing advanced hydrologic expertise and proficiency in GIS tools, reflecting regional investment in sustainable water management and power plant site development.

While a Professional Engineer (PE) license is valued, Colorado employers often prioritize candidates with strong hydrology and hydraulics backgrounds, plus experience using software like HEC-HMS and AutoCAD. Local regulations may encourage state-specific licenses for advanced project roles.

Mastery in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling tools like HEC-RAS and HECHMS is essential, alongside experience in watershed delineation using ArcGIS and StreamStats. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Matlab enhances data analysis capabilities in flood risk and stormwater system design.

Senior Water Resources Engineers focus on flood risk assessment, dam failure analysis, and stormwater infrastructure design tailored for power plant sites. Their role demands integrating hydrologic data with energy systems planning, setting them apart from general civil engineers who may not specialize in energy-related water resource challenges.

Sargent & Lundy fosters advancement through exposure to cutting-edge renewable energy and carbon capture projects. Engineers benefit from a collaborative environment, ongoing training in specialized tools like HEC-RAS, and opportunities to contribute to award-winning infrastructure designs that emphasize sustainability and innovation.

Sargent & Lundy’s focus on decarbonization technologies and combined cycle power plants offers engineers complex challenges in renewable integration and carbon capture, distinguishing its projects from peers who may emphasize conventional water resource tasks without the same renewable energy emphasis.

The compensation for this role typically spans from approximately $82,380 to $125,860 annually, reflecting the specialized expertise required in hydrologic design and energy sector applications, alongside competitive benefits that align with industry standards in the Englewood region.

A hybrid schedule with three in-office days fosters vital teamwork and hands-on coordination while allowing flexibility for focused technical work remotely. This balance supports effective project delivery in complex water resource engineering tasks linked to power plant site development.

Engineers must accurately model extreme hydrologic events and structural responses, requiring advanced proficiency with tools like HEC-RAS 2D and comprehensive data interpretation. These analyses are critical to ensuring safety and compliance within high-stakes energy infrastructure environments.

Demonstrating hands-on experience with HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, GIS platforms, and programming languages such as Python or Matlab is crucial. Candidates should emphasize project examples where these tools directly influenced flood risk assessments, stormwater design, or energy site development outcomes.
