Job Summary and Responsibilities
Job Summary:
The Mammography Technologist, who, under the direction of the Radiologist or Imaging Supervisor, performs mammography procedures and documents accurate and quality Mammography studies of normal and abnormal anatomy. The Mammography Technologist is responsible for Quality Control on the Mammography Unit and documentation required for state inspections.
Responsibilities:
- Ability to set technical factors to obtain quality scans for diagnostic interpretation by the Radiologist.
- Knowledgeable about technique necessary to obtain the different views associated with a screening or diagnostic exam.
- Ability to obtain magnified coned views when applicable.
- Performs QA on mammography unit.
- Knowledgeable about documentation of QA for state inspection.
- Must track licensures for physicians and technologists necessary to maintain state license.
- Responsible to set down with the Imaging Supervisor and state for annual inspection.
- Responsible to prepare and clean patient exam rooms.
- Performs the duty of changing linens, stocking supplies, wiping down tables and cleaning equipment insuring an efficient, safe, clean environment for the patient.
- Must follow infection control practices: hand washing before and after each patient.
- Knowledgeable about the Infection Control Manual and follows procedures for isolation and aseptic techniques.
- Prepares the patient for the examination.
- Insures the patient is properly attired for the examination.
- Interviews patient for medical history.
- Explains the procedure to the patient and inquires if they have any concerns or questions.
- Must have knowledge and ability to operate stereotactic equipment.
- Assists the Radiologist with breast biopsies obtaining a hard copy of the specimen to document accurate location of the area of interest.
- Must be knowledgeable about sterile technique so a sterile field is maintained during the biopsy.
- Must be proficient in setting up the stereotactic machine and positioning the patient correctly for the Radiologist to obtain the proper specimen.
- Responds appropriately to the demands of work challenges.
- Responds to the changes to implement new processes with the Mammography Department.
- Supports peers, co-workers and superior to ensure a collaborative effort is achieved.
- Responds appropriately to the opinions and feelings of others when confronted with stress associated with change.
- The Mammography Technologist must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status.
- Must possess the ability to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs to provide the care needed as described in the departments policies and procedures.
- Knowledgeable regarding specific information which has been developed further in the departmental job standards appropriate to the individual Mammography Technologist.
- Must perform computer tasks in the Meditech system, PACs system and the Hologic Mammography equipment.
- Insures that the proper exam has been ordered, and the paperwork has been completed.
- Ability to complete the billing process in the Meditech Module.
- Ensures that the exam is put into the PACs system and online for the Radiologist to read.
- Maintains patient confidentiality adhering to HIPPA regulations.
- Attends all classes provided by Mercy on HIPPA regulations.
- Knowledgeable about who is authorized to ask for patient information (patient designated individuals and physicians involved in the patients care).
- Evaluates patient information only when necessary to perform the procedure requested by the physician.
- Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
- Responds to the needs of the department to expedite patient care.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- 1 OR 2 years mammography experience and general Radiographic experience.
Licensure and Certifications:
- Medical Radiographer: CA (MRAD:CA)
- Basic Life Support - CPR (BLS-CPR)
- Fluoroscopy Radiology Tech: CA (FLRAD:CA)
- Registered Technologist Radiography ARRT (RTR) or Registered Technologist Mammography (RTM)
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Training:
- Able to perform Mammography with no supervision
- Good customer service skills
