Frequently asked questions
In Erie, PA, employers often look for candidates who have completed an EKG class tailored for monitor technicians along with competencies verified within the first month. While a high school diploma suffices, having a background as an LPN, paramedic, or nursing student with EKG training boosts your chances in this competitive healthcare market.
Erie’s healthcare sector shows steady demand for telemetry technicians, especially in specialty hospitals like Select Medical. However, competition remains moderate due to the specialized skills required. Per diem and PRN night shifts tend to attract professionals seeking flexible schedules, balancing supply and demand effectively in this region.
Telemetry technicians specialize in continuous cardiac monitoring, interpreting complex EKG rhythms, and responding promptly to alarms. Unlike general patient care techs, their expertise lies in detecting lethal rhythms, validating strip interpretations with RNs, and maintaining vigilant observation, crucial in critical illness recovery settings.
PRN night telemetry techs often face fluctuating patient monitoring demands with fewer staff support, requiring high autonomy in recognizing arrhythmias and responding swiftly to alarms. Their shifts can involve managing critical alerts in quieter hospital hours, demanding both vigilance and adaptability distinct from daytime team dynamics.
Telemetry technicians working 12-hour PRN night shifts in Erie typically earn around $22.00 per hour, aligning with regional healthcare wage standards. This rate reflects the technical expertise required, night shift premium, and the per diem nature of the position, offering competitive hourly compensation within Pennsylvania’s medical staffing landscape.
Select Medical offers an extensive orientation to ease newcomers into their telemetry roles, plus opportunities for career growth toward full-time employment. Benefits include 401k eligibility after reaching 1,000 hours and access to employee assistance programs, reflecting a commitment to both professional development and personal well-being.

This culture promotes growth potential, emotional well-being through supportive programs, and recognition of the vital role technicians play in delivering high-quality patient care during challenging hours.
A frequent misunderstanding is that telemetry techs simply observe monitors passively; in reality, they actively interpret complex EKG data, promptly respond to critical alarms, and collaborate with RNs to validate findings. Their role is dynamic and essential for patient outcomes, especially within specialty hospitals focusing on post-ICU recovery.
