Frequently asked questions

Sarasota's healthcare sector is growing, making patient account specialist positions moderately competitive. Local facilities value candidates with hands-on experience in Medicare and Medicaid billing, so staying updated on regional billing codes and compliance standards helps improve hiring chances in this market.

While national credentials like CPC or CPB are recognized, Sarasota employers often prefer familiarity with Florida Medicaid billing nuances. Pursuing regional workshops on state healthcare regulations or patient account management can provide a valuable edge in this area.

Mastery of CPT-4, ICD-9, and ICD-10 codes combined with strong claims analysis capabilities is essential. Additionally, adaptability to handle billing disputes and proficiency in multi-specialty account management distinguish top performers in this patient account specialist role.

This role often leads to advanced positions like Billing Supervisor or Revenue Cycle Analyst. Gaining expertise in managed care remittance and developing project management skills can open doors to leadership roles overseeing patient financial services.

The daily routine integrates meticulous billing review and prompt follow-ups on past due balances alongside direct patient communication to resolve disputes. Excelling requires both analytical precision and diplomacy to maintain smooth financial operations.

FPG emphasizes cross-training across multiple specialties and mandates strict adherence to up-to-date fee schedules. Representatives must navigate interdepartmental coordination, including collaboration with physicians and office managers, demanding versatile communication and problem-solving skills.

FPG fosters skill diversification through cross-training opportunities and encourages tackling special projects. This approach prepares support service reps for expanded roles in patient financial services, enhancing expertise in coding compliance and claims resolution.

In Sarasota, compensation for this mid-level patient account specialist generally falls between $38,000 and $47,000 annually. Pay varies depending on experience with Medicare/Medicaid billing and proficiency in medical coding systems, reflecting growing demand in the healthcare sector.

Unlike entry-level positions, a Support Service Rep II handles complex coding reviews, appeals, and contractual allowance postings. This role requires deeper analytical skills and greater autonomy in managing accounts to optimize revenue cycles.

Typing at least 50 words per minute and comfort with Windows-based billing software significantly enhance efficiency. These proficiencies enable timely data entry and accurate claims processing, crucial for maintaining minimal accounts receivable balances.
