Frequently asked questions

In Chattanooga, credentials like the Professional Engineer (PE) license are crucial for an Electrical Engineer 2 - Grid. Additionally, certifications in protective relaying, SCADA systems, and familiarity with IEEE and NESC standards significantly boost local employability and demonstrate expertise in power grid engineering.

Chattanooga's growing energy infrastructure projects create a steady demand for lead electrical engineers, particularly in high-voltage substation design. Compared to larger cities like Nashville, Chattanooga offers competitive opportunities with less competition, benefiting engineers focused on grid modernization and protective relaying.

Engineers often encounter complex coordination of relay protection settings, integrating diverse vendor equipment like SEL and ABB, and ensuring compliance with evolving NEC and IEEE standards. Troubleshooting communication systems within SCADA and telemetering networks in high-voltage environments also requires advanced technical problem-solving skills.

At Sargent & Lundy, the role involves leading design teams through protective relaying philosophies, preparing complex calculations, and managing client interactions. The position demands balancing technical oversight with mentoring engineers and coordinating with vendors to deliver timely, code-compliant substation upgrades.

The hybrid setup, requiring three in-office days weekly in Chattanooga, fosters hands-on teamwork during critical design phases while allowing focused remote periods for detailed engineering tasks. This balance supports effective communication with clients and peers, enhancing project delivery and mentorship opportunities.

Offering between $131,960 and $205,330, Sargent & Lundy's compensation aligns well with national standards for senior power systems engineers. This range reflects the specialized skill set required and the regional cost of living, making it an attractive package for experienced professionals in the Southeastern power engineering market.

Candidates should emphasize expertise in SKM, ETAP, and Aspen for power system analysis, along with proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation for design drafting. Familiarity with vendor-specific relay software and MS Office tools further strengthens the application by showcasing readiness for complex project demands.

In Chattanooga, engineers must be adept with regional adaptations of the National Electrical Code (NEC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), along with ANSI and IEEE standards. This knowledge ensures compliance in substation designs and protection schemes tailored to Tennessee's utility requirements.

Progression often leads from technical leadership roles like project lead to managerial positions overseeing larger engineering teams. Sargent & Lundy's culture of peer learning and communities of practice supports continual skill development, enabling advancement into senior engineering or strategic operational roles within power systems.

The company fosters growth through mentorship programs, access to industry-standard training, and peer knowledge exchanges. Their merit scholarship and tuition assistance initiatives also encourage engineers to pursue advanced certifications and stay current with evolving power grid technologies and standards.
