What You'll Be Doing
The Corporate Risk Management / Paralegal provides administrative and paralegal support to the Legal and Risk Management Departments, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and hospital policies. This position supports the investigation, management, and resolution of claims and incidents, assists with contract review and document preparation, maintains legal files, and works collaboratively with hospital leadership to mitigate organizational risk.
- Assist the General Counsel and Risk Management team in the investigation, evaluation, and management of patient incidents, claims, litigation, and administrative actions.
- Serve as liaison with external counsel, insurance carriers, and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Maintain and update risk management databases, incident logs, and claim files to ensure accurate and up-to-date information.
- Draft, review, and organize legal documents, correspondence, subpoenas, affidavits, discovery responses, and other related materials.
- Coordinate medical record requests, chart reviews, and document production in response to subpoenas, litigation, or claims.
- Support the contract management process, including initial review, routing for signature, and maintaining contract files.
- Monitor compliance with internal policies related to insurance coverage, claims reporting, and risk mitigation.
- Assist with preparation of reports and presentations for leadership and the Board as needed.
- Coordinate risk management and compliance training sessions for hospital staff.
- Track licensing, credentialing, and regulatory requirements relevant to risk management and legal compliance.
- Support audits, inspections, and accreditation reviews (e.g., The Joint Commission, NJ DOH).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the General Counsel and/or Director of Risk Management.
What We're Looking For
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program strongly preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of relevant experience in a healthcare legal or risk management setting, preferably in an acute care hospital or healthcare system.
- Experience handling medical malpractice or general liability claims is preferred.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of HIPAA, New Jersey healthcare laws, and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and risk management software.
