Frequently asked questions

Englewood's oil and gas engineering positions often emphasize hybrid work flexibility and a strong focus on structural steel and concrete foundations, reflecting regional industry demands. This role integrates site visits with design collaboration, balancing office time with field verification, which may vary compared to fully remote or strictly onsite roles in other markets.

Familiarity with design codes like IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318 is highly valuable in Englewood's oil and gas projects, as these standards govern structural integrity under local seismic and wind conditions. While not mandatory, knowledge of regional construction practices and permitting processes also enhances effectiveness in this market.

Proficiency in structural analysis, reinforced concrete design, and steel structure evaluation is essential. Entry-level engineers should also demonstrate competency in preparing technical calculations, load assessments including seismic and wind factors, and collaborating on multidisciplinary teams to ensure design accuracy and safety under operational conditions.

Starting as a Structural Engineer 1 in oil and gas opens pathways to specialize in advanced structural design, project management, or field engineering roles. Exposure to diverse facility types and complex load conditions builds expertise, potentially leading to senior engineering positions or cross-functional roles involving construction coordination and client engagement.

Daily tasks blend creating detailed structural designs and calculations with occasional travel for site inspections and coordination meetings. This mix ensures theoretical models align with practical realities, requiring engineers to adapt designs based on construction feedback and to maintain direct communication with project managers, vendors, and clients.

Sargent & Lundy offers award-winning benefits that notably support work-life balance, including hybrid schedules and comprehensive health coverage. Their commitment to professional growth and robust compensation, alongside a culture recognized for excellence, distinguishes their Structural Engineer 1 roles within the competitive oil and gas engineering market.

The company emphasizes mentorship under structural leads, enabling entry-level engineers to refine technical skills and participate in complex project phases. Access to diverse software tools and exposure to real-world challenges, like seismic load analysis, foster a rich learning environment, setting a strong foundation for future career advancement.

The stated compensation between $60,660 and $87,090 aligns well with regional entry-level engineering salaries in oil and gas, reflecting local cost of living and market demand. This range also factors in hybrid work benefits and performance bonuses, making it a compelling package for new graduates focused on structural engineering.

A common misunderstanding is that entry-level roles involve only routine calculations; however, engineers here tackle complex load scenarios including blast and pressurization stresses. They also engage in troubleshooting and design revisions, requiring critical thinking and adaptability beyond basic tasks.

Structural engineering in oil and gas is steady but competitive in Colorado, with growth tied to regional energy projects and infrastructure upgrades. While mechanical and petroleum engineering roles may have broader openings, structural specialists with expertise in steel and concrete design remain crucial for facility safety and longevity.
