Responsibilities
As a Sr. Underwriter, you will apply advanced knowledge to develop, underwrite and manage a profitable book of new and renewal business across different premium bands. You will be integral in driving and delivering meaningful contributions to our production underwriting process and customer experience to assist us in achieving our financial targets. You will also work closely with department leadership to execute department strategy, analyze data to generate and implement solutions, and serve as a mentor and subject matter expert for our underwriting team to build a highly skilled and sales-focused team.
The Sr. Underwriter fulfills the primary responsibilities of the role by executing the following duties and tasks:
- Review and evaluate new and renewal workers compensation accounts to determine approval or denial of risks
- Effectively determine price/premium rate in alignment with our new business and retention plan goals
- Manage a book of new and renewal business to promote company profitability
- Build and maintain strong relationships across BerkleyNet and the W.R. Berkley enterprise to profitably grow our business
- Partner closely with our Business Development team to coordinate and execute in-person and virtual agency/broker visits to build and foster strong business relationships
- Assist leadership in the development of our new business & retention plan strategy for the upcoming year
- Manage key relationships with agents, brokers and insureds, and build a program for ongoing management of middle market and large accounts
- Proactively identify areas for process improvement, innovation, and opportunities to improve efficiency and synergy, and generate solutions to drive improvement
- Aid in the management and implementation of strategic initiatives
- Proactively review data metrics to identify new opportunities within the underwriting function
- Regularly monitors changes in laws and market conditions that impact underwriting procedures, and partners with leadership to develop strategies to adjust to changing conditions
- Serve as a mentor and subject matter expert to our underwriting staff to grow them into a more sales-focused team, and improve their technical underwriting skills
- Lead department or cross-functional project teams, and own and lead department functions
- Collaborate effectively across teams to develop and implement strategy
- Represent BerkleyNet at agency events, networking events, or within the scope of a relationship with an insured
- Demonstrate a deep understanding BerkleyNet’s business and underwriting appetite
Qualifications
- 4 - 6 years of experience in the workers compensation insurance industry
- Ability to make decisions incorporating diverse perspectives
- Excellent prioritization, planning and organization skills
- Strong customer orientation including strong interpersonal, communication and consultation skills
- Ability to manage and influence in a cross-functional matrix environment
- Strong discretion in dealing with highly confidential and sensitive information
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills coupled with a strategic and “big picture” mindset
- Proven record of setting delivery commitments and meeting expectations
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- CPCU, ARM, or other relevant insurance industry designation preferred
