Frequently asked questions

Senior Electrical Engineer 2 - Grid positions typically demand expertise in medium to high voltage power systems, substation design, and knowledge of ANSI/IEEE standards. Advanced skills in project management, troubleshooting complex grid issues, and proficiency with design software like AutoCAD set this role apart from more general electrical engineering jobs.

Professionals in this role often advance by deepening technical expertise in substation design and power systems, acquiring PE licensure, and gaining leadership experience managing multi-disciplinary projects. Networking within engineering communities and obtaining specialized certifications can further accelerate growth toward senior engineering or managerial positions.

Daily tasks often involve coordinating detailed substation designs, ensuring compliance with regional electrical safety codes, and addressing site-specific grid reliability issues. Engineers must juggle multiple projects, liaise with clients, and adapt to hybrid work environments typical in Woodbridge’s engineering sector.

Woodbridge benefits from proximity to major power utilities and industrial hubs, leading to steady demand for grid engineers. However, competition is intensified by a concentration of experienced professionals. Candidates with PE licenses or substation design expertise often have a hiring advantage in this region.

In New Jersey, possessing a Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly regarded for senior grid engineering roles. Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code (ANSI C2) and experience with regional utility standards also enhance employability within local power grid projects.

Sargent & Lundy offers a robust benefits package including comprehensive health plans, paid time off, and flexible hybrid work schedules. Employees benefit from a supportive culture recognized with multiple workplace excellence awards, promoting professional growth via peer learning and community engagement.

At Sargent & Lundy, this role emphasizes teamwork within project groups and active participation in 'communities of practice' where engineers exchange insights. Such structures facilitate continuous learning, ensuring solutions align with industry standards and client expectations.

Sargent & Lundy offers a competitive salary range for this role between approximately $95,840 and $147,870 annually. This package reflects local market trends and includes potential bonuses alongside comprehensive benefits, aligning with senior-level grid engineering responsibilities.

While core duties like substation design and power system analysis are consistent, Sargent & Lundy emphasizes a hybrid work model and strong team collaboration. Their focus on peer learning and award-winning benefits can distinguish this position from similar roles at other national grid employers.

Engineers at Sargent & Lundy engage in high-voltage substation projects requiring both detailed design work and active client communication. They often travel to client sites, gaining diverse field experience not always offered by other firms in the electrical grid sector.
