Frequently asked questions

Working on the Regional RN Supplemental Staffing Team involves dynamic floating across multiple hospital sites throughout Kentucky and West Virginia. Unlike fixed-location nursing roles, this position demands flexibility to handle varying assignments, including emergency responses and seasonal staffing, offering broader clinical exposure and adaptability.

RNs in supplemental staffing often develop versatile clinical skills, positioning them well for roles like nurse manager, clinical educator, or specialty nursing positions. Floating across departments broadens expertise, accelerating readiness for leadership or specialized certifications within regional healthcare systems.

Beyond the mandatory nursing license and BLS, certifications like ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and de-escalation training are pivotal. Achieving specialty certifications aligned with ICU, PACU, or emergency care boosts credibility and expands assignment opportunities within Appalachian Regional Healthcare.

ARH emphasizes a flexible regional float model, allowing RNs to serve across multiple sites while fostering patient-centered care that respects cultural and psychosocial factors. Their structured support and focus on quality improvement set a collaborative tone distinct from standard staffing agencies.

Adapting quickly to different hospital cultures and patient populations is key. RNs must manage varying protocols efficiently while maintaining high-quality care. The role’s travel and shifting assignments demand excellent organizational skills and resilience to thrive in this dynamic environment.

Lexington's healthcare sector shows steady demand for skilled RNs, especially those with flexible staffing expertise. Competition is moderate, with Appalachian Regional Healthcare valuing nurses who demonstrate adaptability and relevant certifications, reflecting regional staffing shortages balanced by growing healthcare facilities.

Given the regional float expectation, nurses should plan for travel up to 75 miles or more between sites. Traffic patterns, rural road conditions, and shift timings can impact commute times, so flexibility and reliable transportation are essential for consistent assignment fulfillment.

Regional RNs in supplemental staffing typically earn between $58,000 and $75,000 annually in Lexington, KY, depending on experience, certifications, and float assignments. Specialized skills and willingness to travel often lead to higher pay within Appalachian Regional Healthcare's competitive compensation structure.

ARH provides access to ongoing education, certifications, and leadership training tailored for floating nurses. By encouraging participation in quality improvement projects and mentoring, they foster a growth-oriented environment that enhances clinical skills and career trajectories.

The variable float assignments can offer diverse schedules but require adaptability to different shifts and locations. While this flexibility benefits some nurses seeking variety, others might find the travel and changing environments challenging for maintaining consistent routines.
