Frequently asked questions

Pediatric Electrophysiologists focus on diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders in children, using advanced techniques like catheter ablations and device implants. This specialization demands deeper expertise in electrophysiology beyond general cardiology, ensuring targeted care for complex arrhythmias in young patients.

Candidates should combine clinical expertise in invasive and non-invasive electrophysiology with academic strengths such as mentoring, research publication, and program development, especially in pediatric arrhythmia management. Proficiency in genetic arrhythmia syndromes and advanced mapping systems also enhances effectiveness in this role.

Daily tasks often involve managing complex arrhythmia cases, performing electrophysiological studies, and device implantations while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Balancing inpatient and outpatient care, interpreting various cardiac monitoring data, and responding to urgent consults demand both precision and adaptability.

OHSU provides a rich academic environment with ample research funding and interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in pediatric cardiac care. The presence of renowned specialists and access to state-of-the-art technologies fosters career growth while serving a diverse pediatric population across Oregon and neighboring regions.

Faculty actively collaborate across cardiology, cardiac surgery, and genetics departments to advance arrhythmia care. This integration supports innovative research, clinical trials, and outreach initiatives, enhancing comprehensive treatment approaches and expanding pediatric electrophysiology services regionally.

Portland’s growing pediatric healthcare sector, anchored by OHSU’s academic leadership, creates moderate demand for electrophysiologists. Factors like Oregon’s licensure requirements, emphasis on academic credentials, and regional outreach efforts shape a competitive but rewarding job market for specialists.

Beyond board certification in pediatric cardiology and electrophysiology, Oregon values medical licensure eligibility and fellowship training from accredited programs. Additional expertise in catheter ablation and device management, along with documented research involvement, strengthens a candidate’s profile locally.

Salaries typically range from $250,000 to $350,000 annually depending on experience, academic rank, and clinical workload. Portland’s cost of living and OHSU’s status as a leading institution may influence competitive compensation packages, often including benefits and research support.

This role mirrors a national shift towards blending clinical excellence with research and teaching responsibilities. The focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, advanced procedural skills, and program development aligns with growing expectations in academic cardiology for comprehensive pediatric arrhythmia care.

Applicants should prepare a detailed CV and a tailored cover letter highlighting their fellowship training, board certifications, and relevant research. Submitting these documents online through OHSU’s portal ensures consideration, with attention to demonstrating alignment with the university’s mission and diversity values.
