Location : Portland, OR, 97201

Job Type : Full Time / Part Time

Date Posted : 12 January 2026

Department Overview

The Vollum Institute is a privately endowed research institute at Oregon Health & Science University dedicated to basic research that will lead to new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Vollum scientists have broad-ranging interests that coalesce around molecular neurobiology and cellular physiology. Their work has transformed the field of neuroscience and, in particular, have provided important advances in the study of synaptic transmission, neuronal development, neurotransmitter transporters, ion channels and the neurobiology of disease.

This position is full-time postdoctoral level (PhD in neuroscience or biophysics). The responsibilities are to conduct research exploring the molecular and cellular mechanisms of synaptic transmission between neurons using electrophysiology and/or calcium imaging. The candidate will be involved in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments for independent research project(s) using electrophysiology, molecular, cellular, circuit and live imaging approaches in the mammalian brain.

Function/Duties of Position

This position is full-time postdoctoral level (PhD in neuroscience or biophysics) in the von Gersdorff lab in the Vollum Institute.

  • Planning, executing, and analyzing experiments for independent research project(s) using electrophysiology, molecular, cellular, and live imaging and computational approaches in the retina and/or CNS.

  • Manuscript preparation for individual projects and assisting other lab members with manuscripts as needed.

  • Assisting the PI and other lab members with grant application (data acquisition, writing assistance, editing) as needed. Preparing fellowship applications.

  • Traveling to national and international meetings to present on findings.

  • Helping to mentor and train junior members of the laboratory.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in relevant field of study (Neuroscience and/or Biophysics or Computational Physics)
  • Direct experience in studies of neurons, synapses and/or brain circuits.
  • Knowledge and experience with computational and cellular techniques.
  • Experience with manuscript preparation and writing skills for individual projects and statistical analysis of data are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience in studies of neuronal imaging/morphology.
  • Imaging experience and work with live neurons and brain slices and analysis of patch clamp data.

All are welcome

Frequently asked questions

Portland's vibrant academic community, including institutions like Oregon Health & Science University, creates a moderately competitive environment for postdoctoral neuroscience roles. Candidates with strong electrophysiology and imaging skills tend to stand out, as these are highly sought after in local research labs focused on neurobiology and brain circuits.

While formal certifications are uncommon, expertise in electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and computational analysis is highly valued at Oregon Health & Science University. Demonstrated experience with live neuronal imaging techniques and statistical data analysis significantly boosts candidacy for postdoctoral fellowships.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow, you engage in independent research projects and contribute to cutting-edge studies on synaptic transmission and neuronal circuits. This role offers a blend of hands-on experimental design, manuscript writing, and mentorship responsibilities that are less common in technician or graduate-level positions.

Daily tasks often include designing and performing electrophysiology experiments, analyzing calcium imaging data, and collaborating with team members on manuscripts. Balancing lab work with preparing grant and fellowship applications is also common, alongside mentoring junior scientists within the research group.

Graduates frequently transition to academic faculty roles, research scientist positions in industry, or specialized clinical research. The fellowship hones advanced technical and analytical skills, enhancing prospects for leadership roles in neurobiological research and multidisciplinary collaborations.

OHSU's Vollum Institute is renowned for its focus on synaptic physiology and neurobiology of disease, offering access to state-of-the-art imaging and computational tools. The institute fosters a collaborative environment encouraging innovative approaches to neurological disorders, setting it apart from regional competitors.

Postdoctoral fellows at OHSU benefit from comprehensive health coverage, access to advanced research facilities, and travel support for national and international conferences. The university also emphasizes diversity and inclusion, providing mentorship programs and professional development tailored to early-career scientists.

Postdoctoral fellows in Portland typically earn between $50,000 and $60,000 annually, reflecting the region's moderate cost of living relative to cities like Boston or San Francisco, where salaries might be higher but so are living expenses. OHSU offers competitive compensation aligned with NIH postdoctoral stipend scales.

Yes, OHSU emphasizes mentorship through close interaction with principal investigators and senior scientists. Fellows often participate in collaborative grant writing, manuscript development, and lab leadership, fostering a rich environment for professional growth and networking within the neuroscience community.
