Frequently asked questions

Given Portland's traffic and urban layout, candidates must reside within a 30-minute radius of OHSU's Marquam Hill campus to respond swiftly during after-hours emergencies, ensuring timely support for critical pediatric cardiac interventions.

In Oregon, a valid diagnostic radiologic technologist license from the state medical imaging board is necessary, while certifications like PALS, ACLS, and BLS tailored for pediatric cardiac care significantly enhance employability in specialized centers like OHSU.

Expertise in fluoroscopy, ultrasonography, and intra-operative MRI (IMRI) is vital, as these tools support complex pediatric cardiac and neurosurgical procedures, enabling precise imaging guidance during interventions.

This role entails specialized pediatric cardiac imaging in a high-acuity surgical environment, requiring cross-training in electrophysiology and hybrid OR settings, contrasting with broader radiology roles focused on routine diagnostics.

Technologists can advance by obtaining certifications like RCES or RCIS, moving into specialized electrophysiology labs, or contributing to academic research and teaching within pediatric cardiology departments at institutions like OHSU.

OHSU fosters growth through ongoing education, clinical research participation, quality improvement projects, and tuition reimbursement, encouraging technologists to broaden expertise in pediatric cardiac imaging and interventional procedures.

They not only operate complex imaging equipment but also prepare sterile supplies, assist with threading stents and balloons, and maintain equipment functionality, ensuring seamless procedural support in both pediatric and congenital cardiac cases.

Portland offers a growing demand in pediatric cardiovascular imaging due to specialized centers like OHSU, but competition remains moderate with opportunities favoring candidates possessing pediatric interventional certifications and local licensure.

Salaries typically range from $75,000 to $95,000 annually, influenced by experience, certifications, and pediatric cardiac specialization, aligning with competitive compensation for cardiovascular technologists in Oregon's healthcare sector.

Absolutely, the role demands close cooperation with surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and cardiologists within OHSU's high-acuity pediatric OR, ensuring integrated patient care during complex cardiac and neurosurgical interventions.
