Frequently asked questions
San Antonio's healthcare sector is growing steadily, making LVN / LPN positions in high demand. However, competition varies by facility. ResCare Community Living offers a unique niche in developmental disability services, which might have less competition compared to general hospitals, providing a promising employment opportunity.
Besides the mandatory state licensure, Texas employers value CPR certification and experience with developmental disabilities. For roles like those at ResCare Community Living, additional training in behavioral health or adaptive equipment use can enhance your candidacy in this specialized field.
LVN / LPNs in community living, such as at ResCare, focus on routine care, medication administration, and close monitoring of clients with developmental disabilities. Unlike RNs, LVNs typically work under RN supervision and concentrate on implementing care plans rather than creating them, emphasizing hands-on support.
Many LVNs or LPNs leverage their general nursing experience to pursue RN licensure through bridge programs. Specializing in areas like developmental disabilities or psychiatric nursing, as offered by companies like ResCare, can also open doors to leadership or specialized care roles within community health.
Working at ResCare involves managing complex care needs for individuals with developmental disabilities, requiring adaptability and strong communication skills. Balancing medication administration with behavioral support and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams can be demanding but rewarding.
ResCare invests in ongoing education, quality improvement activities, and interdisciplinary collaboration. LVN / LPN staff are encouraged to participate in team meetings and training sessions, fostering skill development in specialized care areas like psychotropic medication management and adaptive equipment use.
The position offers a competitive hourly rate around $26.00, reflecting San Antonio's market for licensed vocational/practical nurses. This wage aligns with the specialized skills required for supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and performing medication administration duties.
While prior experience is preferred, ResCare values candidates with strong nursing fundamentals and a willingness to learn. Newcomers can gain valuable exposure and training in this niche, particularly if they hold valid licensure and CPR certification, gradually building expertise in developmental disability care.
Texas licensure requirements and the focus on developmental disability services at ResCare differentiate the role from LPN positions in states like NJ or CT, where hospital or correctional facility settings might dominate. Additionally, Texas offers a larger market with distinct community health priorities.
LVNs / LPNs at ResCare engage deeply in tailored care plans for clients with cognitive disabilities, including vital sign monitoring, medication management following six rights, and liaising with families. This hands-on, community-integrated approach contrasts with more acute care-focused nursing roles.
