About Shriners Children’s Southern California

Shriners Children’s Southern California, located in Pasadena, is a premier pediatric specialty care facility offering comprehensive services in orthopedics, cleft lip and palate, and reconstructive plastic surgery. Our Pasadena facility is one of two ambulatory surgery centers in the Shriners system, providing a full spectrum of pediatric orthopedic care, including sports medicine, hand surgery, and general pediatric orthopedics. The facility is also home to a walk in fracture and sports medicine clinic staffed by our Advanced Practice Providers.

Our center is equipped to provide same-day surgical care and includes two state-of-the-art surgical suites and four post-anesthesia care units. Job Overview

Shriners Children’s Southern California is seeking a fellowship-trained Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon to join our distinguished team. We are looking for a surgeon with specialized training and expertise in pediatric upper extremity or sports medicine, though all fellowship-trained pediatric orthopedic surgeons are encouraged to apply.

Position Highlights

• Practice Environment:
• Ambulatory surgery center and clinic setting—no ER call.
• Home call is limited to patient concerns on a 1-in-5 rotating basis.
• Walk-in fracture and sports medicine clinic Monday–Friday, staffed by experienced APPs.
• Surgical volume of 15–20 cases per week, with significant expected growth.

• Schedule:
• 2 OR block days/week
• 2 clinic days/week
• 1 swing day/week (for additional OR, clinic, or administrative time)

• Team & Support:
• 3 Anesthesiologists
• 2 orthopedic residents on rotation – teaching is an integral part of the role.
• Supported by 5 APPs (3 in orthopedics, 2 in plastic surgery, cross-covering clinic and occasionally OR) and 1 athletic trainer.
• 5+ pediatric orthopedic surgeons

This position entails a 1.0 FTE commitment. Candidates can expect to receive an annual salary between $509,948-$926,226 commensurate with experience, training and departmental equity.

Responsibilities

• Perform clinical assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and treatment planning for pediatric patients with orthopedic conditions including limb deformities, scoliosis, fractures, hip dysplasia, clubfoot, and other musculoskeletal disorders.
• Provide surgical and non-surgical management based on current standards of care, evidence-based practices, and patient-specific considerations.
• Participate in inpatient and/or outpatient care, including preoperative and postoperative management, consultations, and discharge planning.
• Perform operative procedures in accordance with institutional protocols and safety standards.
• Collaborate with pediatricians, physiatrists, physical therapists, anesthesiologists, and other subspecialists in the coordinated care of patients.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record system in compliance with legal, regulatory, and institutional requirements.
• Participate in shared call coverage, hospital rounds, and trauma response as assigned.
• Contribute to departmental quality improvement, peer review, and clinical governance processes.
• May participate in medical education, research, and scholarly activities depending on institutional affiliation or department expectations.
• Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards
• Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations.

Qualifications

Education

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
• Completion of an ACGME accredited residency in Orthopedic Surgery
• Completion of fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery
• Additional fellowship training in upper extremity/hand surgery or sports medicine preferred but not required.

Experience

• 1-3 years of post-fellowship or equivalent clinical experience in pediatric orthopedic surgery preferred; recent fellowship graduates will be considered based on training and clinical exposure

Certification and Licensures

• Board certification or eligibility in Orthopedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS), with subspecialty certification in Pediatric Orthopedics required
• Must possess eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice
• Must possess eligibility for active DEA
• Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
• Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws

Additional Knowledge and Skills

• Comprehensive knowledge of pediatric orthopedic surgical techniques, growth and development, and musculoskeletal conditions unique to children.
• Proficiency in operative planning, surgical execution, and perioperative management in pediatric populations.
• Familiarity with pediatric imaging, casting, bracing, and non-operative treatment protocols.
• Effective communication and counseling skills for engaging with pediatric patients and their families.
• Ability to function in a multidisciplinary environment and manage complex care scenarios.
• Competency in use of electronic medical record systems, documentation standards, and clinical decision support tools.
