Frequently asked questions

This position uniquely blends high voltage substation design with project management in a hybrid work setting, emphasizing medium voltage power systems expertise and collaboration. It demands both technical precision and client communication skills, setting it apart from standard electrical engineering roles focused solely on design.

While the role supports a hybrid schedule, occasional travel to client substations around Indianapolis and nearby locations is anticipated to oversee project phases and troubleshoot complex electrical system challenges in person.

Possessing a PE license is highly valued, alongside familiarity with ANSI/IEEE/NEMA standards and National Electrical Safety Code compliance, which enhance credibility when handling substation design and high voltage safety.

Compensation typically falls between $95,840 and $147,870 annually, reflecting experience in medium voltage systems design, project leadership capabilities, and the regional market demand for senior electrical engineering talent.

Indianapolis has a moderate but growing demand for grid engineers, thanks to ongoing infrastructure upgrades and utility expansions. Compared to larger hubs, competition is balanced, offering substantial opportunities for engineers with specialized substation design skills.

Beyond standard healthcare and retirement plans, the company provides flexible work arrangements, paid parental leave, tuition assistance, and bonus programs, fostering a supportive environment rare among utility engineering employers.

The award-winning culture fosters collaboration through peer learning and communities of practice, encouraging engineers to engage in knowledge sharing while managing complex substation projects with autonomy and cross-disciplinary teamwork.

This position requires balancing technical design with project tracking including schedules, budgets, and client communications, ensuring project milestones are met efficiently while maintaining engineering accuracy and compliance.

Engineers often navigate complex troubleshooting scenarios involving grounding calculations, protection schemes, and coordination of multiple design diagrams, demanding meticulous attention to detail and up-to-date knowledge of standards.

The regional emphasis on modernizing substations and integrating smart grid technologies shapes project priorities, requiring engineers to adapt designs to evolving regulatory requirements and customer reliability expectations.
