At Fort Sanders Perinatal Center, we’re here for women with pregnancies that require extra care, and we’re ready to help you make the best healthcare decisions from conception through delivery. For more than 25 years, we’ve provided comprehensive high-risk pregnancy services and delivered over 26,000 high-risk babies at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. We offer a range of care services for higher-risk pregnancies, including mothers over age 35, multiples, complications, birth defects, issues such as diabetes or hypertension, or pregnancies after infertility.

Department Description:
Our OB/GYN team of board-certified physicians and advanced practitioners are extensively trained in women’s health and provide comprehensive gynecology and obstetric services. For women facing a high-risk pregnancy, we partner with the perinatologists at Fort Sanders Perinatal Center. You can expect us to partner with you and provide education, guidance and compassionate care. With more than a century of combined medical experience, our expert healthcare team is ready to provide you with excellent care.
Position Summary:
Provides comprehensive healthcare to a selective population of essentially healthy women. Participates in the care of women with medical complications in collaboration with Obstetrician-Gynecologists, following established medical protocols.

Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required, and adjusts processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
- Performs accurate history and physician examinations.
- Identifies health hazards in the patient's environment as well as patient risk factors. Identifies and considers the cultural patterns, economic status, and patient resources in plan of care.
- Participates in office clinic and Hospital schedule as assigned.
- Obtains appropriate laboratory specimens.
- Performs in office procedures as appropriate to include: Annual Exams, Colposcopies, IUD insertion and removal; Nexplanon insertions and removal; incision and drainage procedures
- Analyzes objective and subjective data for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
- Provides primary gynecological and obstetrical care in an ambulatory setting, following established medical protocols.
- Provides inpatient obstetrical care including:
- Labor management
- Vaginal delivery of infant(s)
- Repair of lacerations/episiotomy
- Management of minor complications, following established medical protocols
- Initiates emergency care as needed.
- Rounds on assigned OB/GYN Hospital Patients.
- Other services as outlined in hospital privileges including but not limited to:
- Management of triage patients
- Management of antepartum and post-partum patients
- ER Consultations
- Admission and discharge of OB/GYN patients
- NST Interpretation
- Ultrasound fetal heart rate and/or fetal presentation
- After clinic hours patient phone calls
- Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records and maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc. Documents all pertinent information.
- Refers patient to appropriate services which exceed scope of practice of the practitioner.
- Provides health promotion counseling and develop patient teaching information.
- Participates as needed in research activities and data collection.
- Instructs and supervises medical and midwifery students and other learners as assigned.
- Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Education:
Master’s degree from an accredited school of midwifery
Minimum Experience:
Two (2) years’ experience in a midwifery practice or as a labor/delivery nurse.
Licensure Requirement:
Must have and maintain TN license for both Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with Certificate of Fitness to Prescribe, as well as have and maintain certification of American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). Must have and maintain Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration. CPR Required.
