Description
Our Government Services Group, one of our five (5) market focused business units, has opportunities for engineering professionals in our design group. This group specializes in DOE facility design, both new and retrofit designs, as well as special purpose gloveboxes and the associated controls and auxiliary systems, precision furnaces, hot cells, custom pressure vessels and other one-of-a-kind equipment.
As a member of a multi-disciplined project team, this position will offer you the opportunity to utilize and expand your designer background and/or technical experience in Instrumentation and Controls, Automation, and Electrical Design.
- Work on project teams with other I&C designers and engineers involved in the design of new Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based control systems, instrumentation, automation systems, communications systems, Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), and other industrial control system platforms
- You will be involved in the preparation of design media for the procurement and implementation of software, instrumentation, and control system platforms
- Develop your career via peer learning by way of Sargent & Lundy's systems of process and associated "Communities of Practice"
- This position will offer you the opportunity to utilize and expand your design and drafting skills, while working in a multi-disciplined team environment with other designers and/or engineers in the preparation of design drawings based on design input
- You will have the opportunity to apply your computer-aided drafting skills in 2D and 3D design software environments.
- You will be involved in creating drawings to scale showing relation of proposed installations to existing facilities and exact specifications and dimensions
- You may accompany and assist experienced engineers and designers on walkdowns at client facilities to gather information for your design project
Qualifications
Must be a U.S. Citizen; Dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.
Essential skills and experience:
- Associate's Degree in drafting or a high school diploma and 1 or more years drafting course work or equivalent technical experience
- 8+ years of relevant experience in drafting and design
Proficient with AutoCAD and software
Experience in the design of instrumentation, control systems, automation, electrical/controls, or similar engineered equipment in a project team environment with a focus on conceptual and/or detailed system design for either new facilities, or upgrades for existing facilities
Experience is required with instrumentation and controls, automation, communication systems, electrical systems, P&IDs, loop diagrams, control panel layout, elementary diagrams, wiring diagrams, cable and conduit schedules
Experience in preparation and review of instrumentation, control system, automation systems, communication systems, or electrical systems design drawings
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented approach to work
Valued but not required skills and experience:
BIM modeling using Autodesk products (Revit) or equivalent
MicroStation
Navisworks
Experience with ProjectWise or SmartPlant Foundation or similar document management type applications.
Basic Working Knowledge of I&C applicable codes and standards such as UL-508A, NFPA/NEC, ISA.

Sargent & Lundy’s Government Services Division provides cutting-edge engineering design and consulting support to the management and operating contractors for US Department of Energy (DOE) sites and national laboratories.
