Frequently asked questions
Portland's healthcare sector shows increasing demand for Allergy and Clinical Immunologists, driven by growing patient needs in pulmonary and immunologic care. However, competition remains moderate, as specialized qualifications like ABIM certification and fellowship training narrow the candidate pool. Networking within OHSU and local medical communities can enhance hiring prospects.
Candidates with ABIM certification in Allergy and Immunology and completion of accredited fellowships are highly favored at OHSU. Additionally, involvement in clinical research or experience leading multidisciplinary clinics related to asthma or food allergies can strengthen an applicant’s profile, aligning with the institution’s academic and clinical priorities.
This role uniquely blends clinical expertise with active academic contributions, including teaching fellows and residents, and conducting research. Proficiency in managing both inpatient and outpatient allergic disorders, plus leadership in multidisciplinary clinics, sets it apart from purely research-focused immunology positions.
Academic titles open pathways to leading innovative research projects, influencing clinical protocols, advancing education through fellowship mentorship, and potentially taking on administrative leadership within divisions such as pulmonary and critical care medicine, fostering a balanced career between patient care and scholarly work.
In academic roles, clinicians often engage with complex cases, participate in clinical trials, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. Teaching responsibilities add educational duties alongside patient care, whereas private practice tends to focus more exclusively on direct patient management without the academic research or instructional components.
OHSU offers a rich blend of clinical diversity, cutting-edge research opportunities, and a culture valuing diversity and inclusion. Faculty members benefit from supportive academic infrastructure, access to multidisciplinary collaborations, and the chance to impact both patient outcomes and medical education in a leading regional health institution.
The position functions within a collaborative environment addressing lung diseases, asthma, and immunologic disorders. This integration allows for shared clinical expertise, combined research initiatives, and joint educational programs, enhancing comprehensive patient care and advancing scientific knowledge across related specialties.
Salaries typically range between $180,000 and $250,000 annually, depending on experience, academic rank, and clinical workload. Portland’s competitive healthcare market and OHSU’s status as a major academic center contribute to compensation packages that reflect the specialized skills and responsibilities required.
Candidates should develop strong communication skills suitable for instructing fellows, residents, and medical students. Familiarity with current allergy and immunology research, active participation in grand rounds, and a commitment to educational innovation are essential to excel in this academic teaching environment.
Balancing patient care across dispersed sites can involve logistical complexities like travel time and coordinating multidisciplinary teams. Ensuring consistent quality of care and maintaining effective communication with satellite staff requires adaptability and proactive organizational skills.
