Frequently asked questions
Mercer, PA has a moderately competitive scene for float physicians in correctional health due to growing demand for specialized care. Physicians with dual expertise in internal medicine and psychiatry often stand out, as facilities prioritize integrated treatment approaches for underserved populations.
Beyond the Pennsylvania medical license, board certification in family or internal medicine plus DEA registration significantly improves a float physician's chance of securing roles in corrections. Psychiatric experience also adds value, given the patient population’s complex mental health needs.
Float Physicians in Western PA often juggle clinical oversight of ARNPs, minor procedures like sutures and lumbar punctures, and after-hours calls. Unlike hospital physicians, they operate in varied settings—correctional and outpatient—requiring adaptability and collaboration with psychiatric and interdisciplinary teams.

Mercer's semi-rural setting means limited traffic congestion but potentially longer drives between facilities. Physicians valuing community impact often appreciate the manageable commute versus urban centers, although travel requirements may necessitate flexible scheduling to optimize time.
While Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have higher overall physician demand, Mercer’s niche in correctional healthcare offers steady opportunities with less competition. This makes it attractive for physicians seeking meaningful roles with underserved populations without navigating crowded urban job markets.
Wellpath’s Float Physician role uniquely demands clinical oversight capabilities, minor procedural skills, and interdisciplinary collaboration within correctional environments. This contrasts with typical float medical assistant jobs by requiring advanced medical degrees, board certification, and a commitment to vulnerable patient care.
