Frequently asked questions

Colorado Springs has a growing need for speech language pathologists, especially in acute care settings like Penrose Hospital. The region's expanding healthcare infrastructure and aging population contribute to steady job openings, making it a promising location for professionals seeking roles in neurological and rehabilitative speech therapy.

Yes, to work in Colorado as a speech language pathologist, you must hold a current Colorado state license. Additionally, certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is critical, ensuring that clinicians meet national standards for professional competence and clinical practice.

Successful speech language pathologists here combine clinical expertise with adaptability to diverse patient needs, including neurological and cognitive disorders. Proficiency in electronic medical records and the ability to collaborate across interdisciplinary teams are also highly valued in this region’s healthcare facilities.

Catholic Health Initiatives fosters growth by providing access to advanced clinical resources and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration. The organization’s Magnet® hospital designation reflects its commitment to nursing and allied health excellence, creating an environment where speech language pathologists can thrive and expand their expertise.

This position offers exposure to a wide array of neurological and complex speech disorders within a major acute care provider, blending high-tech medical-surgical services with compassionate patient care. The organization's focus on humankindness and community well-being shapes a supportive workplace culture distinct from other local employers.

Speech language pathologists in Colorado Springs typically earn between $70,000 and $85,000 annually, reflecting the city's moderate cost of living and healthcare demand. This range aligns closely with national averages, though local benefits and hospital prestige can influence total compensation packages.

Many assume speech language pathologists only work on speech clarity, but their role extends to cognitive, swallowing, and voice disorders. In inpatient settings, they frequently engage in interdisciplinary care plans addressing complex neurological impairments, which requires broad clinical knowledge beyond traditional speech therapy.

The role requires availability for three weekends per 12-week schedule and coverage during one summer and one winter holiday annually. While this ensures continuous patient care, it demands flexibility and strong scheduling management to maintain personal time and avoid burnout in a dynamic hospital environment.

Candidates must possess a master’s degree in speech-language pathology, current ASHA certification, a Colorado state license, and basic life support certification. Experience with electronic medical records and at least two years of direct patient care, preferably in inpatient or outpatient contexts, enhance competitiveness.

The position involves medium physical exertion, occasionally requiring lifting up to 50 pounds. This reflects the hands-on nature of inpatient care, such as assisting patients with mobility during therapy sessions. Candidates should be prepared for physical activity while maintaining clinical focus.
