Frequently asked questions

An SCA Estimator focuses specifically on School Construction Authority projects, requiring expertise in interpreting schematic documents for educational facilities. This specialization demands familiarity with local regulations and standards unique to New York’s public school construction sector, distinguishing it from general construction estimator roles.

Success as a Sca Estimator in New York hinges on strong analytical skills to interpret incomplete plans, collaboration with diverse stakeholders, and adaptability to fast-paced project changes. Familiarity with MEP systems and experience in public-sector bidding processes significantly boost effectiveness in this role.

Starting as a Sca Estimator often leads to senior estimating or project management positions, especially in firms specializing in public infrastructure. Gaining expertise in cost negotiation and team leadership opens pathways to executive roles overseeing large-scale school construction projects in NYC.

Gilbane provides comprehensive training through its award-winning university, fostering leadership and technical growth. Employees benefit from a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, competitive health plans, and profit-sharing, making it an attractive choice for SCA Estimators seeking long-term career development.

At Gilbane, core values like integrity and teamwork shape collaboration and decision-making for SCA Estimators. This culture encourages empathy, problem-solving, and ownership of work, creating a supportive environment where estimators contribute to safe, timely, and value-driven school construction projects.

The demand for skilled SCA Estimators in New York is steady due to ongoing school infrastructure investments. However, competition is notable because of the city’s large construction market. Candidates with specialized MEP and public-sector estimating experience typically have an edge in securing roles.

Given NYC's high living expenses, salaries for SCA Estimators range between $90,000 and $120,000 to remain competitive. This bracket reflects the need to attract experienced professionals capable of managing complex public construction projects while offsetting the city's elevated housing and commuting costs.

Employers prioritize candidates with degrees in architecture, construction management, or engineering, coupled with at least eight years of estimating experience, including five in MEP disciplines. Knowledge of local codes and prior work on school authority projects greatly enhances a candidate’s appeal.

The Gilbane SCA Estimator role is uniquely focused on public education projects, demanding precision in cost evaluations from schematic designs and frequent coordination with multiple stakeholders. Unlike generalist roles, it requires navigating specific regulatory frameworks tied to New York’s School Construction Authority.

Gilbane emphasizes inclusive hiring, valuing diverse backgrounds and encouraging candidates even if all qualifications aren't perfectly matched. Applicants should anticipate a thorough evaluation process including substance testing, with a focus on both technical skills and alignment with the company’s people-first culture.
